The Magic Zoo Artist Focuses on Animal Themed Jewelry
In 1989 I was a young mom with two small children. To help with our family's income, I decided to create my own business. And since I'd been creating art since I was knee high to a commercial artist (my mom), I decided my business would be creating, marketing and selling my own art!
I've always loved animals. So re-creating their personalities and images in wearable art was completely appealing to me. I started out working in colorful polymer clay, and actually walked down business streets in Marin County, California back in the late 80s and early 90s introducing myself as a local artist and showing my designs to owners and employees. Yes, I was a door-to-door saleslady of my own jewelry!
From that humble beginning, I graduated to participating in recognized art shows around the country. A bit later on, I branched into having my original designs cast in sterling silver, 14K gold, bronze and pewter. Colorful cold enameled jewelry designs also became part of my line.
But all along, I have been the only designer in The Magic Zoo. To this day, every single one of my creations starts with a "Merry Rosenfield original." I wouldn't have it any other way!
My husband Ed was my business partner and best friend until he passed in December of 2020. I now work with my son David, who has slipped seamlessly into the role as administrator and IT of The Magic Zoo.
My studio is just outside the small mountain town of Mountainair, New Mexico, where on summer days I can gaze outside my studio window at flocks of surprisingly noisy hummingbirds. And in any season I can see the Manzano Mountain range covered in pines or blanketed in snow. This is remarkable country, and I have fallen in love with it.
I think Etsy is a wonderful venue for artists, and I look forward to meeting many of you through our mutual love of animals and art!
