One woman's journey with a Bernina and her determination not to follow the herd...

I originally opened a bricks and mortar store, The March Hare, in Looe, East Cornwall, in April 2010, selling vintage clothing and accessories plus reproduction/retro underpinnings and corsetry. Within 2 days I realised that vintage clothing wasn't going to fit most of the ladies who came into the shop, so I took a day off, bought a new Bernina (because my mother refused to part with hers) and started to make retro skirts, petticoats and frocks. This blossomed into my Wednesday March fashion line, which is mostly bespoke but does have occasional samples on sale. I closed that shop in 2014 as the location was rubbish but continued to work as a bespoke seamstress and started to study tailoring.

In 2015, I found my dream studio workspace and spent just over a year creating beautiful garments - everything from simple circle skirts to full on 18th century Poldark costumes - in a beautiful white-painted barn at the bottom of an old orchard, surrounded by parkland and sheep. Life, however, sometimes takes surprising turns and I had to give up the studio up in order to have more time for my career as a professional musician - something I never thought I'd be saying at this stage of my life!

The other strange twist was getting back on the ice, nearly 20 years after the accident that wrote off my first career (as a skating coach). It continues to be a major passion and one of the things that make me, "me" although now I have the joy of skating for the love of it, rather than having the stress of trying to progress and make a living.

TheMarchHareStudio Etsy shop is where you'll find me destashing my treasured stocks and remnants, plus occasional ready to wear garments and samples. If you like my designs, you can commission a custom garment. I have a City & Guilds Level II Qualification in Bespoke Tailoring (with distinction), so you can be fairly confident I know what I'm doing with a needle...

I mostly make to order, so please just send me a convo if you're interested in a commission, however big or small.

Frequently asked questions

Because most of what I sell is fabric that is cut to your order, I can't accept cancellations once the fabric has been cut. If there is a fault with your order, ie a manufacturing fault/flaw in the fabric, then I will obviously refund or replace it. Absolutely. If there is any problem at all with your order, please contact me as soon as possible as I will do all I can to sort it out. I'm human. Talk to me. :-) And if you wouldn't mind leaving me some nice positive feedback when you've been happy, that would really be appreciated. Mx
