Currently, USPS shipping delays can at times be a problem, of which I have no control. Order early and thank you for having patience in your heart during this challenging time.

I started The Nightjar on Etsy in 2008 as a way to make art that I could share with other people, and a way for people to collect my work in a more affordable way. About 5-6 years in to having The Nightjar I gave birth to twins and my life became hectic!. Instead of keeping The Nightjar open, I decided to reopen when my children grew up a bit.

So, here I am in 2021 reorganizing and reopening my beloved Etsy shop. I hope the artwork and paintings I share brings as much happiness, joy and connection as I had when I painted them. This body of work is my humble effort to ground our souls and calm our hearts and connect with the earth.

In hope for a renewed vision for our planet - we are all connected.

With gratitude,
Tarra Lyons

On Etsy since 2008

The Nightjar features paintings by Tarra Lyons, a painter who creates Oil, Watercolor, and Graphite

A little about my art background:

I began creating art when I was very little and started making “serious” art when I was around seven years old. I grew up in the Bronx, New York in a working-class neighborhood in an area that had very little to offer in terms of nurturing creative growth in children. Spending time in the Arts and Crafts section of The Bronx Public Library was a haven and beacon of light for me. Art books opened a door to a universe of creative possibilities.
The majority of my time was spent one summer reading the art book “The Drawings of Leonardo Da Vinci”- I poured over this massive book, with its exquisite drawings for months until the librarian gently informed me I needed to renew again.
Da Vinci’s drawings inspire my own artwork to this very day- many of my paintings and drawings have themes of nature running through, I even have a tattoo of one of Davinci’s Cat drawings on my forearm.
Today I am fortunate to be an art professor, and I spend time teaching and talking about art such as Da Vincis’ to help pass on the tradition of fine art making. I hope to keep this ancient tradition alive.

As a young adult received a BFA in painting from at Boston University, School for the Arts. This education was strictly formal, with old men in lab coats taught me how to measure proportions by using skeletons and anatomy during figure drawing class. It was all very formal, mostly technical, and for me, a little dry and boring.
My years in graduate school at California at California College of Art in Oakland CA. changed my approach to something much freer and creatively based, less formal, less technical.

I am grateful for all of the years of learning craft, and currently I go “off leash” and explore informally and more importantly, have fun.

I am now a college art professor myself and I try my best to teach art in a way that is not seen as dry and boring by my students...fat chance, lol.
