The Shop a Town Built

The story of my business is actually the story of my little town. I'm from in a tiny town in North-central PA. Population under 1,000. In that tiny town, I started a small shop where I would sell my vintage finds and upcycled crafts. I always joke that really, I just needed a place to store all of my projects that I'd never finish so I rented a store-front.

While playing in my craft hoard one day, I found a couple of old softballs shoved in a drawer. I tore them apart, and I made a sign. I made the sign and I posted it on my Facebook page. That's it. And then something happened. The post went viral.

All of the sudden, I had thousands of messages pouring in from all over the country. I had so many messages that I couldn't even begin to read them all. My friends were volunteering to become admins on my FB page so they could help field the messages. For a few days, I couldn't even breathe.

And then the orders came. Hundreds and hundreds of them. All at once. My waiting list grew to a 26 week wait. And at this point, I still had no idea how I was going to manage one order, let alone hundreds. I had made a sign that required two softballs to be torn apart and re-sewn on top of staining and stenciling each board by hand. I had no supplies. I had no softballs. I had no idea what I was doing. (That last one took a little time to admit.)

My saving grace was my town. People poured through the doors to help. My friends sanded and stained boards, cut stencils, answered messages and kept me calm. I had a local retired man spending his entire week - every work day and sometimes Saturdays too - ripping apart softballs. I had women stopping by on their way home to grab softball skins so they could so sew them while they watched TV at night. A local woman who had just closed her own business came every single day and handled all of my post office work. It was madness, in such a good way.

These people DONATED their time to me. They worked for free. Every day. Hours and hours and hours. And never asked me for a dime. They wouldn't even let me buy them lunch most of the time. In the end, we shipped nearly 1,000 signs. (That's 3,000 softballs!) They will never know how truly grateful I am to them and how much their efforts set the rest of my story in motion.

After the insanity of the "softball sign" days, I decided I needed a platform that was more efficient than FB messenger and Excel spreadsheets Etsy is that platform and that is how The Painted Sign Company was born.

I love this story. I tell it every time I get the chance. I've come a long way since then, and still when I get busy, people come out of the woodwork to help. <3

I no longer sell the original sign that started it all, but I do have a version of it here:
