The Joy of Being Present... and of Trains

I am an oil painter who has been commuting into New York City on the railroad for many years. From the beginning of my commuting days, I saved my multi-colored monthly tickets, knowing these pretty little things would eventually be part of some art project. Although I considered my commute to be a bit of a grind at first, it eventually turned into a fascinating experience. Looking out the railcar window with my coffee and hearing the train chugging its way to New York from Long Island began to be a gift as I realized what a wonder it is to witness this world. And then the lightning bolt hit me and I knew what to do: I had to paint the beauty of the railroad onto these little tickets.

My tiny train paintings are a celebration of being present, of paying attention. Splendor and beauty are everywhere, often in the most unexamined places. And these little railroad paintings are a reminder to be present and be joyful every step of the way in this world.

I’m an oil painter and train commuter. I love to paint railroad scenery on the back on my monthly train tickets. These little train paintings are a reminder to stay present and be joyful every step of the way in this world, even on your commute!
