About

Studio.Tartuensis

A museum and studio for letterpress and intaglio techniques, a hotbed of new ideas for old crafts, a center for print-related education, research and art. Studio.Tartuensis is a unique combination of all the above and then some more.

Founded as a non-profit in 2010, Studio.Tartuensis has become an important center for graphic arts and printmaking in the University Town of Tartu, Estonia. Collaboration with several art schools gives us a steady flow of the freshest and brightest ideas that we try to cast into physical form as prints, books, postcards... Sometimes it all works out, sometimes all we are left with is ink on our fingers.

This storefront is where you can find beautiful, practical or strange products of our making. Your purchases will be used to keep us up and running to meet the digital revolution head-on, armed with 19th century equipment.

As for the name — we call our studio and notebook series Tartuensis in homage to our home town and one of the oldest universities in Northern Europe, Universitatis Tartuensis — The University of Tartu. From K. E. von Baer, who discovered the ovum in mammals to Y. Lotman, the founder of Soviet (Tartu-Moscow) school in semiotics, Tartu has been the meeting point of great minds since 1632. We intend to keep it that way.

    Owner, Maker

A semiotician by education, a systems administrator by former career, founding member and executive manager of the Printing Museum. He really should be pushing papers instead of making notebooks, but simply cannot help himself sometimes.

  • Mana Kaasik

    Photographer, Customer Service, Maker

A student of history, a collection manager at our museum, she also moonlights as our photographer and graphic designer. Mana is known for her perfectionism and the things that pass her watchful eye are always special.

  • Agnieszka Hanna Kunz

    Maker

A polish girl living in Tartu, working at a youth centre as her main job. At the studio, she most of all specializes in making Sherlocks and always takes time to look through old photo books to find the most amazing end sheets for the covers.

  • Pauline Rummel

    Maker

Media and advertisement design student by day, notebook wizard by night. That means a little bit of drawing, a little bit of filming, a little bit of gluing and a lot of coffee.

Shipping
You can choose between regular or registered mail (by adding an upgrade in the cart for a few $). We recommend using registered mail. If the item is shipped by regular mail we cannot do anything to check where it is or when it arrives. We are not responsible for items lost in regular mail.

The second notebook ships much cheaper. The final weight incl packaging is a bit difficult to calculate for multiple items, so if we should accidentally overcharge you for shipping, we will refund the overcharge.

Shipping times are approximately 1-2 week for Europe and 2-3 weeks for US.

Orders within Estonia can be shipped with Smartpost, Cargobus or Omniva.
Refunds and Exchanges
If the product is not up to the standards advertised, we'll give you a full refund.

For the Tartuensis notebooks it is sometimes difficult to see inside the binding etc once it's finished. If ever it breaks, you'll get a new one. But questions will be asked — we want to see the damage to make a better product next time. But don't worry — thus far nothing has broken.
