vintage & handmade jewelry

The Rajah Press was not always a jewelry shop. When it started in the early 1960s it was a whimsical business operated out of a post office box, started by my grandfather—a manifestation of his imagination, love of treasure hunting, and belief that objects and ideas could have many lives.

He created the press after learning about these upside-down comic strips illustrated by the comic strip illustrator Gustave Verbeek. The strips could be read both right-side up and upside-down. Having only ever heard about them, he embarked on an adventure to locate a copy, share it with Verbeek’s descendants, and republish the book for others to enjoy.

In his words: “My family, who had been following the treasure hunt, were as amazed and amused by what Verbeek had done as I was, and so we decided that we would publish a book of these, though we really didn’t quite understand the implications of such a decision. Nevertheless, the world needed to know about Verbeek and his unusual genius, and Dorothea Verbeek deserved to see these elusive strips.”

The name RAJAH is an acronym for the names of his kids and wife: Richard, Ann, Jane, and Helen. When my grandfather died, I knew I wanted to give that name and his legacy a second life. I hope that his optimistic spirit can live on by giving new stories to old artifacts. I’m honored that you’ve joined me on that journey.

V I N T A G E // gold rings:
purchasing fine jewelry over the internet can feel intimidating, and so The Rajah Press offers a 7 day grace period solely for the fine gold items in the shop. If the fine gold item you purchase is not 'the one' please reach out via Etsy and then return it, fully insured, with tracking, within 7 days from when you receive the ring. Shipping costs and careful packaging associated with the return/exchange is the responsibility of the buyer. A refund less a 5% restocking fee will be processed within 24 hours of receiving the ring back from you.

*As of 2/12/2021 a 5% restocking fee will be charged for returned items — it's an attempt to find a balance between flexibility & trying to dissuade the trend of people purchasing items without careful consideration.*

V I N T A G E // jewelry other than vintage gold rings:
The Rajah Press is selling vintage items and as such, we do our best to represent any flaws they may have before you purchase them. For this reason, we are not accepting returns on items since they are being sold 'as is'. If, however, the item is grossly misrepresented (this is not likely to happen – items are carefully inspected & photographed): The Rajah Press will accept returns on grossly misrepresented items within 10 days of purchase. To do so, please send a message via Etsy and we will process your refund once we have received your returned item. Be aware that shipping and careful packaging associated with the return/exchange is the responsibility of the buyer.

H A N D M A D E // fine jewelry
The Rajah Press press's handmade pieces are often one-of-a-kind, and we truly hope that you love the handmade piece you selected. Purchasing fine jewelry over the internet can feel intimidating. for this reason The Rajah Press offers a 7 day grace period for handmade fine jewelry that has not been altered for the buyer (sizing, etc). If The Rajah Press original you purchase is not 'the one' please contact us via Etsy and then return it, fully insured, with tracking, within 5 days from when you receive the item. A refund will be processed within 24 hours of receiving the item back from you. Returns are accepted for handmade items that break/become unwearable because of a manufacturing defect that we should have caught (i.e. a chain isn't strong enough for the stones are strung on it and so it breaks).
Payment
HOLDS
The Rajah Press is happy to 'reserve' items free of charge for 48 hours. Items held longer than 48 hours require a 20% deposit.

LAYAWAY:
The Rajah Press is happy to offer layaway for fine jewelry

Etsy is now capping the shipping date to a maximum of eight weeks after purchase date, which forces me to limit layaway options via Etsy, only, and cap the timeline at 60 days.

While layaway payments via Etsy are capped at 60 days, there is flexibility on the number of payments within that timeframe. orders are processed and shipped once the final payment is received.

HOLD & LAYAWAY items will be listed with a 'reserved' listing that includes your name
Shipping
If you choose the 'free shipping' option your item(s) will ship via USPS First Class Mail with tracking. If you want your item to arrive within 1 week of shipment date, please upgrade to the 'express' option at checkout, which is USPS Priority Mail.

Items are generally shipped within 3 days of purchase unless there is a holiday or weekend delaying ship date. Items sent with 'free shipping' should be expected to arrive in approximately 10-14 days from the date of purchase if you live within the US. You can send a message before purchase to get a better approximation of delivery date.

international:
The cost of shipping items internationally is significantly higher than domestic shipping and often does not include insurance. Most items do not include international shipping options because of this added cost & risk. If an item shows an international shipping rate, it may include handling charges to cover the extra time spent filling out customs forms, etc. I am happy to add International Priority Mail options on your behalf, for approximately $40
