I'm printing more of my map prints today. These are really popular as gifts for the cyclist you love as I can print them on a map of the area they love to pedal around.

Creating new art using old fashioned techniques.

I studied graphic arts at a time when tutors where pushing computers. I appreciated the technical capabilities but I just loved the experience an original print produced.

It was a full sensory experience. Feeling the texture of the paper, handling the type, carving the linoleum block - you can even hear when you have rolled out the ink to the consistency that is just right.

It is a time consuming process and can take hours, even days to get to the printmaking stage but when printing is in full swing you hit a rhythm and it's like music or the sound of the sea - another favourite sound of mine!

The techniques I use:

Letterpress printing uses a printing press. It originated in China in the 10th Century but it was Guttenberg in 1439 that introduced the method of using moveable type to print books and newspapers and remained in use until the last century. The artist composes and locks movable type (individual letters) into the bed of a press, inks it, and presses paper against it to transfer the ink from the type. My Letterpress items are printed using vintage printing blocks together with wooden and metal type on my lovely old printing press called an Adana 8 x 5.

With the introduction of computers many Letterpress workshops closed down and sadly a lot of their type and equipment was destroyed. Thankfully, a few remain and many artists are realising the beauty of the process and bringing Letterpress into the 21st Century.

Linoleum or Lino is mixture of cork and linseed oil compressed onto a hessian back. It was and still is used as a flooring material. The design is cut into the linoleum surface with a sharp knife, V-shaped chisel or gouge, with the raised (uncarved) areas representing the parts to be printed. The surface is inked with a roller and then impressed onto paper or fabric. The actual printing can be done by hand or with a press.

I also carve rubber stamps or create printing blocks from found materials. All of the above methods offer an effect that can differ from each print which is a characteristic of a hand printed piece.

Thanks for reading - please drop me a line if you would like to know more.

Cheerio for now....

Thank you so much for visiting my shop. I love creating and hope my work can bring a little colour and happiness to your day.

I am a printmaker and create my work using old fashioned methods and all by hand. I use vintage type made from wood and lead. I hand set the type and print my designs using various antique printing presses.

I hand carve my printing blocks and use environmentally friendly inks and paper.

I work from my lovely studio in Liverpool, England.

Returns and exchange details
Work handmade by me may vary very slightly from its edition-mates due to the nature of the printmaking methods I use. The prints that have additional colours added by hand may have very minor variations from piece to piece.

I've included close up pictures of the prints but the colours you see on your screen may not look exactly the same as the actual print. This is because every computer screen is configured differently.

Letterpress items are printed using vintage metal and wooden blocks and these show their history through little dinks and scratches and these little imperfections are part of the appeal in this method and often show in the printing process.

If you still are not happy with your purchase - I'm very happy to chat with you so please contact me to discuss a refund or exchange before you decide to leave public comments or feedback.

**Thank you**
