About

Giving Scrap Copper A Fresh Start

✨ Story ✨

Ever since I was a kid, I was always finding new ways to reuse and repurpose materials to build new things. One time in preschool, I pulled all of the tiny used up crayons out of the wastebasket, crushed them with a tinker toy, and poured glue all over them to produce a rainbow turtle sculpture - total weirdo.

As I grew up, my interest in renewable resources developed further leading me to Appalachian State University's Sustainable Technology program. As my studies progressed, I began to view things by their resources and materials, not only by their intended purpose or use.

One day in the building lab I noticed a huge bin of scrap copper house wire. "Where does it all go?" I asked. My professor shrugged, "Well it sits there for a few months and then eventually it is all just recycled back into more wire."

And that is how I started making jewelry out of the trash wire from my building science class. The process used, called electroforming, merges physics, chemistry, and some artistic precision to allow almost any material to be metal plated. Essentially, what it does is take the copper molecules off of the scrap wire and move them somewhere else using electrical currents and some chemical sorcery that I will never understand.

✨ Process ✨

1. Stones are prepped for plating

2. The stone is set on a strong titanium ring band with a super tough modelling agent

3. The piece is sanded and covered in conductive paint

4. Finally! The piece gets to be plated with copper

5. Lastly, the piece is sanded and polished so that it looks extra awesome

✨ What is a ScrapRabbit? ✨

So glad you asked.

The name "ScrapRabbit" comes from the old lineman's term "rabbit" that was used to describe scrap copper wire. The linemen would go on "rabbit hunts" searching the weeds under their pole for the scrap pieces of wire at the end of the day and usually trade it for tobacco on their way home.

Frequently asked questions
⭐️ Will copper turn my skin green? ⭐️

Probably not - and if it does, it's completely safe and okay

Copper reacts to acidity, causing oxidation on its surface. For jewelry, the main culprits are soaps, lotions, and sweat

The reaction also varies according to your personal body chemistry and some people may not experience any discoloration at all.

A good rule of thumb is to remove your jewelry when washing your hands, applying lotions, cosmetics and during exercise.

⭐️ How can I determine my ring size? ⭐️

Great question!

If you are unsure of your ring size you can use this sizing tool to help you. Be sure to uncheck the "fit to page" box on your printer setting so that the scale is 100%

http://www.ringsizes.co/sizingtool.pdf

If you have the time, the best option is to visit a local jewlery store and be sized (this includes the Walmart jewlery counter).

⭐️ Can I choose the stone used to make my jewelry? ⭐️

Yes!

Although I try my best to select stones very similar to the photographs in the listing, you may still choose your stone.

If you would like to choose your stone, please send me a message through Etsy messenger before or when placing your order. If you leave a comment/message in the actual order, I may see it too late.

⭐️ Where/how are your pieces made? ⭐️

Thanks for asking!

All of our pieces are handmade in our home studio located in the small mountain town of Boone, NC.

We use a process called "electroforming" which uses an electrical current to move metal from a recycled copper coil to your jewelry!

⭐️ Can my ring be resized? ⭐️

In most cases no.

Because of our process, the most we can do is plate the ring band to make it about a half size smaller. If your ring is slightly too big and you don't mind the band being a little larger, we will be happy to adjust the size for you.

⭐️ How long will it take to get my order? Can it be rushed? ⭐️

Most orders ship out in 3-5 business days. The shipping estimate tool on the right side of the Etsy page, is usually on point.

Because of our process, the minimum an order can be made is 3 days - we have a lot of sculpting, sanding, plating and polishing to do 😉

⭐️ Do your items come gift wrapped? ⭐️

All items come dressed up in their gift garb even if your purchase is a gift for you!

⭐️ Do you have wholesale availability? ⭐️

Yes!

We love helping buyers add high-quality handcrafted items to their inventory.

If interested in placing a wholesale order, please reach out to me through Etsy messenger to get started.

⭐️ Do you accept returns? ⭐️

In most cases, yes.

Since each piece is made to order, we kindly ask you to be considerate of our process. Ordering multiple sizes of the same ring, or multiple pieces knowing that you only want to keep your favorite will result in emotional eating and general sadness on my part.

Because our stock is small and each piece is handcrafted, I encourage exchanges.

We will be happy to make you a ring in a different size or let you choose another item from the shop.

Return shipping is paid by you (around $3) and then I pay to send the new item back to you.

International shipping charges can not be refunded.
