My daughter thought this was the coolest thing ever. She loved the little bit of sparkle on it, and asked for another mermaid bath immediately. Since the bar gives you two uses, we did it again for the next bath. The bubbles lasted forever, and it smells amazing! So fun.

About

The Perfect Combination of Science & Art

Hello there! My name is Kelly, and I'm the creative force behind The Soaping Soprano. I live just outside of Charlotte, North Carolina in a tiny little village called Marvin. I'm a lifelong NC resident, and I can't imagine living and working anywhere else.

During my senior year of high school, I took a chemistry research class. One of my classmates chose to research and create lotions and creams as her research project. While my own project focused elsewhere, I was fascinated by the idea that you could make something like a lotion from scratch. It was only a matter of time before I decided to try it out for myself. I immediately fell in love with the process of soap making and the creativity it allows. I love having control over ingredients, colors, scents, and methods. After all these years, I still haven't quite perfected the lotions, but it's certainly fun to try!

My ingredients are carefully selected so that they create the perfect bar of soap. Every single batch is developed, made, cut, and packaged by hand. I enjoy every bit of the process!

When I'm not creating fabulous soaps and other products, you can probably find me singing. I'm a classically trained soprano and I regularly perform around town. Some of my most recent productions include: Dialogues of the Carmelites, Die Zauberflöte, Don Giovanni, I Pagliacci, La Traviata, the Verdi Requiem, Trouble in Tahiti, and The Old Maid and the Thief. I also love teaching piano to my awesome students.

Payment is due upon purchase of an item. Items will not ship until payment has been received. If payment has not been received within 3 business days of purchase, your order will be cancelled and you will need to repurchase the items. I accept all major credit cards (VISA, MasterCard, American Express, Discover), PayPal, and Etsy Gift Cards as payment.

Payment for Custom Orders is due in full at the time the order is placed. This helps secure your order in my calendar. Custom orders are priced dependent upon what is requested. Please contact me through convo if you are interested in a custom order. I love to be creative and help you get precisely what you want! Please allow a minimum of 8 weeks for your custom designed soaps to be completed and shipped, as cold process soaps require a minimum of 6 weeks of cure time before use. If I have the product you requested in stock, this time may be significantly lower.

Residents of North Carolina will have the appropriate sales tax added to your order, based on the county where you live.

If you have a change of heart about your order, you have 24 hours before I ship the order to cancel. I ship orders on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, so please keep this in mind when placing your order. If you change your mind and need to cancel, I will need to know before these days. There is no charge for cancelling an order prior to shipment, and your order will be refunded in full upon cancellation.
Shipping
I ship items on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. All items are shipped via the USPS, most utilizing their Priority Mail Flat Rate Boxes or Pouches. For smaller orders, items are shipped using USPS First Class Mail. This is currently the most economical way for your purchases to be shipped to you. If you prefer that your items be shipped via another method, please contact me at through the Etsy conversation system ("convos") so that we can discuss this and I can set up a different shipping service for your order.

Once shipped, packages typically arrive within 2-5 business days, although I cannot guarantee precisely when a package will arrive. You will be notified when your items have shipped and provided with a tracking number if applicable.

If you require your purchase to arrive within a certain timeframe, please allow ample time for shipping. While I would love to be able to ascertain that my items will arrive by a certain date, I cannot guarantee that the USPS will deliver them in a timely fashion. If your items have not arrived two weeks after the shipping date, please send me a convo so I can try to find out where they might be.

At this time, I only ship to locations within the US.

I will always use the smallest box possible for your order, but must also carefully pack your items to ensure they arrive undamaged. Whenever possible, I use recycled and/or gently used packing materials to help ensure your items arrive in perfect condition.

Any shipping overages greater than $1.00 will be refunded.
Refunds and Exchanges
Because of the personal nature of my products, it is rare that I can accommodate any returns. However, I certainly want you (as the buyer) to be happy with your purchase. If you are unsatisfied for any reason, please send me a convo and we will work something out for you.

If a return is possible, please contact me within 14 days of receiving your items. To be eligible for a return, your item(s) must be unused and in the same condition that you received it, unopened and in the original packaging. To complete your return, I require the original order number, which can be found in your purchase history. Please do not send your purchase(s) back to me without specific instructions to do so.

Once your return is received, I will let you know that I have received your returned item(s). Your refund will be processed within 3 business days.

I only replace items if they are defective or damaged. Please make your selections with care, because I generally cannot accept returns/exchanges on personal care items for reasons other than damage or defects.

You will be responsible for paying for your own shipping costs for returning your item unless otherwise agreed upon in a convo with myself. Original shipping costs are non-refundable.

Due to their extremely personalized nature, Custom Orders are not eligible for returns or refunds.
Additional policies and FAQs
What is the difference between your soap and the stuff in the store?

Handmade soaps use premium ingredients that are carefully selected for their ability to contribute something wonderful to the finished bar of soap. Generally this means that you can pronounce everything on my label. Soaps that you find in the store may commonly use synthetic, detergent-based recipes. Take a look at the label of one of the soaps available in a store and see for yourself what the difference is.

Isn't Sodium Hydroxide the same as lye?

Yes. Sodium Hydroxide is a molecule (NaOH) that is required in order for soap to be created. However, during the actual process of soap making, all lye is consumed and the finished product contains no active lye molecules. It's very similar to making a cake. You put in various ingredients (flour, sugar, butter, eggs....), but those ingredients react together to create a new, tastier, final product. The cake contains these ingredients, but they are no longer individually present in the final product. To make soap, you combine oils, butters, water, and lye, but once they have finished the saponification process, they are no longer present in the finished product. Many soap makers, including myself, add additional oils (called "superfatting") to further ensure that no free-floating, unattached lye molecules are present in the final soap.

How do you make soap?

I use the cold process method of making soap. Outside of melting all liquid and solid oils together, there is no other heating used, unlike the hot process method (which "cooks" the soap batter). After proper measurement and mixing all ingredients, the raw soap is poured into molds and left to "sleep" for 24-48 hours. By this time, the saponification process is fully completed and we have soap! I then unmold the fresh soap, and the soap loaf is then cut into bar shapes. The edges of the bars are beveled, and the soap is set aside to cure for a minimum of 4-6 weeks. This curing period allows excess moisture to escape from the soap and helps produce a harder, longer lasting bar. Each bar is double checked, weighed, packaged, and labeled before finding its way to you! My soaps typically weigh between 4 and 5.5 ounces, although some may be heavier.

I make soap in small batches. Because of this, there may be a natural design variation between batches, and even between two bars. You are buying a handmade product, and no two are precisely the same. But that's most of the fun!

Are your soaps vegetarian/vegan?

Most of my soaps may be considered vegetarian, but not vegan. I use beeswax in some of my recipes, which many vegans choose not to include in their lifestyle. Some soaps may also contain tussah silk, milk, or honey as an additive. These are noted in the descriptions as applicable. I do not use lard or tallows in my soapmaking. I do have some vegan option available, and am working towards making all of my soaps vegan, but please check each listing to ascertain which ones are at this time.

Why is some of your soap brown?

Many things affect the color of soap. The most common (and drastic) of these is vanilla content. Vanilla, or vanillin, typically causes soaps to turn brown over time. The amount of vanillin directly effects the rate of color change. Fragrances with low levels of vanillin will not change much, while fragrances with high levels will turn a dark chocolate brown over time. This generally happens in the 4-6 week cure period, so the colors of the soaps you see in my store should be their final colors.

How do I care for handmade soaps?

Caring for handmade soaps may be a bit different that what you are used to with store bought soaps.

After each use, make sure to place handmade soaps in a well-drained dish away from direct streams of water. Soaps should be allowed to completely dry between uses.

I am planning an event and am thinking about one of your products in a specific color and/or scent. Can you do that?

Of course! I love to play around with colors and scents, and custom orders give me the opportunity to do precisely that. I am happy to provide favors for weddings, baby showers, life events, or whatever you might need them for. Keep in mind that due to the creation and curing time, I need a minimum of 8 weeks to create a custom soap for you. Other products take approximately 2-3 weeks, dependent on quantity needed. Please feel free to contact me via convo to discuss your needs and pricing. Custom orders are not returnable or refundable, due to their extremely personalized nature. Payment for custom orders is due in full at the time of placing the order.

Can I try your soap without having to buy a whole bar?

Yes! I option several options for trying out smaller sizes of my soaps. Please check out the Sample Sets section of my shop to view which would be most appropriate for your needs.
