About

Looming...so perhaps you might get a cuppa and sit down for a wee bit while you browse The Swedish Flicka gifts!

TheSwedishFlicka is a variety shop of up-cycled projects. We have enjoyed creating RAG RUGS from a plethora of used clothing and fabrics. Then, we use the remaining pieces of cloth for our cozy PATCHWORK SCARVES, and just when we thought there were no more use for the scraps left...we made woven POTHOLDERS!

So, we thought this was enough ideas to stock our shop with....but then we realized that there might be other folks that might like to get started looming too. We have added local, hand-made wooden potholder looms for you to create your very own potholders. Afterall, making potholders is how it all began for us here at The Swedish Flicka.

Rag Rug weaving takes quite a bit of time, but it gives you such a wonderful sense of accomplishment. Then the feeling of walking on the finished hand-woven product is just so blissful! We cannot have enough of these rugs in our own home. So whether it is a big weave or a small one...it's all the voice of tradition being passed down!

Our shop consists of 2 boys and a mum that homeschool, amidst many projects that teach us real life experiences. "The Swedish Flicka" name translates to " The Swedish Girl", and of course there are 2 Swedish Pojkar/Boys assistants...but now- that's another story. ☺

Frequently asked questions

How do I wash my Patchwork Scarf OR Baby Blankie?

Patchwork Scarves and Patchwork Baby Blankies:

Please follow the directions on the items tag. It will direct you to wash on delicate in a mesh bag or pillow case and make sure the water is cool.

Do NOT put the Patchwork Scarf or Baby Blankie in the dryer-let it air dry on a hanger. You may iron the cotton pieces on the front side but not the fleecy squares or the reverse fleecy side or they will most assure melt and stick to the iron.

There is just no way to know how each washing machine and dryer will affect the items, however, they are all sturdily made and should stand the test of time. Just take a few minutes to drop your Patchwork Scarf in a pillow case prior to washing and that will ensure that it stays in fine condition.

Are The Swedish Flicka Patchwork Scarves REALLY one-of-a-kind?

YES! We make everything in small batches here, so even if we use similar fabrics and patterns, and square placement, there is never two Patchwork Scarves that are exactly alike. So each one is truly a unique masterpiece!

How do I clean

You can throw your Rag Rug into the washing machine on gentle cycle with as little agitation as possible, and air dry over a stair banister/chair back until completely dry. However, a very old fashioned & traditional way of cleaning a Rug is the freezing snow method. On a cold, clear day (25°F or colder) with at least several inches of fresh powder snow, take the Rug outside and leave it for a couple of hours until it has frozen. Lay the stiff carpet in the snow and whack the exposed surface with a broom. Shake the rug out, turn it over on a fresh patch of snow, and beat the other side. If you wait for a cold, dry day, the rug will barely become wet when you clean it this way, but before returning it to the house, brush off any snow.
