About

Two generations of the Tagalong Press

The Tagalong Press was started 70 years ago by my father, George Bull Young, in a spare bedroom of a house in Amarillo, Texas. Today my collection of antique type & four equally ancient presses take up the back of a garage in southwest Ohio.

Antique type is irreplaceble. I do not take jobs demanding embossing or debossing. Too deep an impression wears the type. I run all jobs with the "kiss impression" that my father taught me.

All type is hand set from a large collection of unique & interesting faces. Artwork is chosen from a collection of old border pieces, electros, and wood & linoleum block carvings.

I enjoy printing tasteful, old-fashion wedding invitation kits & greeting cards. And I like to recycle Dad's old printing jokes on coasters for fictional beverages & patent medicines.

Please contact me about your letterpress printing needs.

Shop members

  • Nils R. Bull Young

    Owner

I was born in Texas, the son of a journalist & a school teacher. I grew up in the US Navy & spent the past 40-odd years working in electronics & educational technology.

  • George Bull Young

    Founder Of The Shop

Dad founded the shop after Army service in the South Pacific during the war. He taught me the art of letterpress, which he'd learned in his youth in the American southwest. He left us just before Christmas of 1982 at age 71, far too young.

  • Chas the Cat

    Shop Supervisor Emeritus

Chas left us 17 January 2014 after a short term as shop supervisor. He was FIV+, spent most of his time sleeping near the type cases, mumbling orders & requests & keeping the printer on task. He was of a long line of more than 10 beloved shop cats.

  • Spots the Cat

    Shop Foreman

Spots the Shop Cat didn't stay around very long. One summer & he was gone. Sweet little guy. And and a feisty foreman.

  • Raffie the Cat

    Shop Foreman

Raffie joined the collection of shop cats early spring of 2014 & quickly made himself at home. He didn't like the clatter of the presses so he usually went up to rest in the rafters over the shop ceiling. Sadly, Raffie left us October 10, 2016

  • Albert the Cat

    Works Supervisor

Albert showed up over seven years ago with two pregnant female cats who have since moved on. Then Albert disappeared for years at a time. We finally rescued him in bad health & gave him a shop apron & a place to work, mainly in sitting on laps.

Welcome to the The Tagalong Press! Celebrating 70 years of Letterpress!
This is a one-man, multi-cat letterpress print shop. I print when can and I when the weather is good & the ink isn't frozen in the can. My main work is quality crafted old-fashion wedding invitations & announcements, greeting cards & coasters.

I don't do rush jobs & cheerfully reserve the right as a retired person to use the word "no."
