About

How we got started

Renting out my family's farm, I had acquired some land that hadn't been used in a while. There were pens and weed-filled gardens. Always wanting to be self-sufficient, I got the chance to live out that dream. I bought a few miniature goats, got handed down some chickens, rescued a barn cat, weeded out the gardens, and started building up a working farm again. The first year was productive with brown eggs, plenty of compost, and produce for me to eat on for half the year. The second year I really got into it - built chicken tractors, milking stands, plowed a huge garden, and am at this stage now. I had heard about goat milk soap, but thought it was impossible to make and time consuming. I started making it the first of the year in 2014 and it was addicting! The scents and easy preparation! The number of goats is now to 9 miniatures. Now I sell Homemade Artisan Soap Bars and produce at the local farmers markets in Bandera and Helotes and occasionally get out the sewing machines for some crafts.

The name "The Betsy Blue Farm" originated from my childhood. Growing up in the city of Austin, Texas, my family lived very close to downtown. My high school was the place to do anything you dreamed of. I loved animals and my family had a vivacious background of Agriculture. I signed up right away for Future Farmer's of America (FFA) and began to learn all about the ins and outs of different levels of farming. I began to get into breeding and after my first show lamb was born, I knew I wanted to be in agriculture for the rest of my life. Betsy was the first ewe I had bred and Blue was one of my other favorite show lambs that I had acquired. I learned a whole lot through my school career even into college and that is how the name and us came about.
