Ethical Design: Connecting the Dots

I come from the islands. But now, I’m based in France.

Before moving here, I was working with indigenous communities from my country and in Southeast Asia to establish community enterprises and market their crafts locally and internationally. Working with them led me to see amazing landscapes, experience wonderful cultures and discover and work with great artisans and their rich resource of natural materials.

To connect the dots means to bridge designers to sustainable sources, to explore possibilities of the natural materials and traditional skills in order to develop new interesting materials, and to find new markets for the creations of the artisans.

Many designers and crafters would love to make their designs and creations more ethical. But there is still a limit on materials that also limits design possibilities. I'd like to bridge that gap by offering them new materials and skills to work with. And in the process, we support the sustainable use of forest resources, strengthen livelihoods of many marginalized communities, and give them an opportunity to continue their traditional crafts.

The TextÎles Co. is built on years of relationship I have nurtured with the artisan groups. Having moved to the other side of the world, I continue my commitment to them through this endeavor.
