Getting Started With Customizing Your Portrait

I offer different levels of customization for portraits. For each aspect of customization, the clearer the information and visuals you can provide me, the better I'll be able to understand and execute your vision. Here are some tips for how we can make this happen:

A. Who's In the Portrait?
The most important part of the portrait is the people in it, so make sure the photos you send clearly show their faces! I'll be drawing from the reference photos you send to determine things like hair, facial hair, and eyeglasses, so be sure to let me know if you want the portrait to show something different from the photo. I'll also ask you to specify if there are any marks such as moles or dimples you'd like to include/exclude in the portrait.

B. Poses
If you have purchased a portrait with a custom pose, please describe and provide a photo of the people in the portrait, in the desired pose. If you don't have a photo, emailing me a stick figure drawing would also be great. Please keep in mind that at the present time I only offer bust-length portraits (head and shoulders).

C. Clothes
A photo of the portrait subjects actually wearing the clothes you'd like to include is best. I feel that it makes the portrait more personal if the subjects are wearing what they own. However, the fun of an illustrated portrait can also involve fanciful outfits you don't own. If that is the case, please provide high-quality images of the clothing you would like me to use, even if it is a product photo you found online. The name of the product and a link to the product page would be great, too. I cannot illustrate custom clothing based only on a written description.

D. Colors
I will ask you for information about the colors you would like to be used in your portrait. This information can be provided by: giving a clear written description, providing an image that clearly indicates the desired color, or providing a hexadecimal color code. The images can be of anything you love, as long as it is clear what part of the image you'd like me to draw color inspiration from.

E. Patterns
At the present time, if you purchase a portrait with custom clothing, you may opt to have the clothing in solid colors or a polka dot or striped pattern. The one exception is if you would like me to use a pattern that already exists in one of my example images. If so, please indicate the example image.

If you are interested in a custom order that goes beyond what is indicated by a listing, please message me. I'd like to learn more about what you have in mind.
