Thingsbuilt originated in Echo Park 17 years ago by two emerging artists with a focus on theatrical set pieces, commissioned pieces for private residencies as well eco based construction projects. 10 years ago we discovered and fell in love with San Miguel de Allende and on a whim, lived there for four years. (Also because we had cancer). The idea for the backpacks came about almost upon arrival, with a love/hate relationship with the Mexican shopping bag, made from recycled plastics. (Also there was nothing to do in San Miguel). We thought we had a pretty good idea, cutting them up and mixing them together. No one has, to this day, tried to make these except us. It's taken us several years to adapt to being back in the states. Last year we introduced our Dashboard Collection. So to wrap it all up we make...

BACKPACKS... different kinds

- for Vintage Car Enthusiasts...
- for lovers of Mexican Folk Art
- for the Urban Recycling crowd

We live and create in downtown LA.

It takes a village to make a backpack. So many places, so many people inspired this work. Mostly, a new take... on something old. Thanks for stopping by.

Welcome to Thingsbuilt - home of the Mexican Bolsa Backpack. After living in the beautiful, magical, inspiring city of San Miguel de Allende in the heart of Mexico, we have UN-retired, and have returned to our home city of Los Angeles to work for a living. Everything is purchased locally here now. Even the Mexican shopping bags, which curiously are not that much more expensive than they were in the tourist markets in Mexico! Imagine that! Or not!

We also are creating a line of backpacks from recycled bicycle tire tubes, because
why not, and also it means one less tire fire in a landfill.

And of course our enduring line of backpacks made from leather with vintage automobile chrome emblems. If you have an old car collector in the family, these
backpacks are sure to please. And they don't leak oil!
