This is a beautifully illustrated map which is printed on high quality paper. I am very impressed and happy with my purchase. I had been looking for a map of 'my bit of London' now that I have moved away, and I couldn't be happier with this. Thank you very much.

About

Unique hand drawn decorative maps and more of London

I have always maintained an obsessive interest in maps and map art and decorative 19th century map prints have been particularly influential.

It was around early 2011 when I decided to create a hand drawn map of Brockley, the neighbourhood in south-east London where I was living at the time; I was intrigued by online discussions about local history, buildings, shops, restaurants and businesses in the area, and so I decided to place it all on a map.

This design was enthusiastically picked up by a local website who ran a feature about it, and almost immediately I received many emails from fellow SE4 residents who wanted to know if they could purchase a copy.

I had never sold prints on a regular basis before, and initially I took orders by email and personally delivered packaged prints to people’s doors and accepting cash (handily most of these early customers lived no more than 10 minutes’ walk from my house).

However I knew this system couldn’t be maintained for long, and I was keen to set up an easy-to-use, safe and legitimate online shop and direct enquiries there.

So, on the advice of my good friend James Ward, a.k.a. Jimbobart (who at that point had successfully been running a shop selling customised ceramics on Etsy for about a year), I decided to set up a profile and shop of my own on Etsy.

Soon afterwards I decided to expand my range and create a whole series of hand drawn, illustrated maps of London, particularly its individual boroughs and neighbourhoods just like the Brockley one. Today I have 17 London maps in my range which is continuing to grow.

Each map is drawn and coloured using a pen tablet using a combination of Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator; the first few maps where entirely drawn on paper with digital edits, whereas these days I create them entirely digitally. Each design takes up to 3-4 weeks to complete.

Alongside my maps, I also sell a range of other prints and products with a strong London theme.

My range of map designs has proven to be particularly popular with London residents, particularly those who are on the lookout for unique London-themed artwork which crucially is personal to them and specifically depicts a place that they live or perhaps work in. Frequently customers mention to me that their purchase is a gift for someone they know, and some of my customers are from as far away as the USA and Australia.

All of this has proven that a relatively niche-interest product can still have a wide-ranging appeal, and Etsy has been a vital part in bringing my work to a bigger audience.

Hello and welcome to my Etsy store! Here you will find a selection of prints, greeting cards and other goodies fresh off the Mike Hall illustrating production line ready for purchase.

At present, all my A4 and A3 size prints are produced personally at my home studio using a HP Officejet 7000 Wide Format Printer with archival ink; all larger prints, from A2 size upwards, are printed by a third party also using a high quality digital inkjet printer; for both methods I always use archival Photorag or watercolour paper for the best quality and long-lasting images. All of my prints are carefully inspected, personally signed in pencil and marked on the rear with my logo stamp.
