Creating wearable art with tie dye is a 10+ step process!!! WHO KNEW?!

Well.....I didn't when I had the bright idea to learn how to tie dye 9 years ago! The journey to achieving the desired outcome has been both inspiring and FRUSTRATING AS HELL!!! It takes PRACTICE (which I have never been a fan of) and PATIENCE, which I lack but I'm learning.

Soooooooooo.....are you ready to learn the process?

Step 1: Buy the stuff. Preferably white and of natural fiber such as cotton, linen, rayon, silk, etc.

Step 2: Pre wash everything in a textile detergent to remove grease, chemicals, and other things that will interfere with the dye adhering to the fabric and giving you the desired color outcome

Step 3: Soak all the stuff in a solution of soda ash and water for 20 minutes- this step is CRUCIAL if you are using Procion dye. The dye will not adhere to the fabric without this step

Step 4: Once you remove the fabric from the soda ash solution, spin it out on the spin cycle in the washer

Step 5: Fold and tie the fabric using rubber bands, sinew, kite string, hemostats, etc...

Step 6: Wait for the fabric to dry.....wet fabric will not absorb the die!

Step 7: Apply the dye. I use a method called Ice dying where I actually put the dye powder directly onto the fabric with various size paint brushes and a small spoon and then layer ice on top. Many dyers will mix the dye powder with distilled water and apply the liquid dye to the fabric with squirt bottles. The results are completely different.

Step 8: WAIT.....24 hours! I know,...this part sucks but it is another CRUCIAL step!

Step 9: Untie and unfold everything while rinsing with cold, then hot, water and blue Dawn dish detergent. THIS PART IS SUPER ANNOYING AS IT IS DONE BY HAND....lots of wringing and re-rinsing until the water runs mostly clear. You want to get as much dye out before you throw it into the washer so that your customers don't become smurfs after the first wearing.

Step 10: Wash the fabric on the HOTTEST LONGEST setting your washing machine has. Mine is called "sanitary" and runs for 2 hours. You MUST use a professional textile detergent to ensure all the dye detaches from the fabric. Nothing worse than a customer telling you that his entire wash was ruined because your wash out wasn't complete.

Step 10: Dry as appropriate for that particular fabric.
