Hand dyed yarns for knitters and other crafters

I'm the daughter of two semi-retired artists - one was a graphic arts designer and the other was a children's book illustrator. The end result is that I've always had a life long obsession with color and an on-again off-again relationship with crafts. I've been a potter, a paper maker and a book binder.

Once upon a time, I had a little free time. And as has been my practice since my late teens, I turned to knitting to fill it up. Heavily influenced by a life-long obsession with color, I decided to explore the creation of the colors of the yarns I worked with and began playing with a yarn dyeing kit.

Many of the products I sell are fine yarns, meant to be used for socks, gloves or mittens. Fine yarns are versatile enough to be used in a wide variety of projects, as long as you have the willpower to keep working on your project.

I love thinking about all the colors that people will wear on their feet, no matter the occasion or where they work. As a knitter, I love working with colors that I enjoy looking at. Yarn is eye candy. I'm finding this to be even more true as a spinner.

The Three Fates
The name comes from the Greek Goddesses also known as The Fates or the Moirae. They are Lachesis, Clotho and Atrophos and the closest thing I could think of to knitting goddesses in mythology. They are sometimes known as the spinner, the weaver and the cutter as they spin the thread of life, weave it into a tapestry and determine it's ending.

As crafters, we sometimes making heirloom quality garments meant to last generations and I love the idea of following the thread of someone's family story through a knitted garment.

I hand dye all the yarns and fibers in small batches. I am sometimes asked how I get such a range of shades onto a semi-solid yarn. I use varying techniques to allow the dye to settle in an organic way and yet maintain the same shade every time.

Three Fates Yarns is a woman owned and operated business located in Salem, Oregon.

I hand-dye, hand-paint and kettle-dye yarn and fibers for all textile artists, knitter, crocheters, weavers, felters and other crafters. I use light-fast and color-fast acid dyes because they are consistent and easy to work with.

I have one part-time employee who helps wind and tie yarn and an off-site contractor who occasionally assists with social media.

I do all of the dyeing at my house.

Additional policies and FAQs

If you are a designer, I am happy to work with you, please message me if you are interested in design support.

Social Policies:
I have no patience for racist, sexist, gender-normative, or other discriminatory behavior. If I see such behavior on the part of businesses that I work with, I will cease to do worth with you for one year and then any future relationship will be reevaluated. People and businesses can change, but the burden of proof will be on you.

Customers exhibiting such behavior in my booth or online platforms will be dealt with and reported to festival authorities.

Environmental Policies:
Yarn and Fiber: Once a year I buy a fleece or processed roving from the west coast or pacific northwest. I get it processed locally and dye it and bring it back to you. This may increase over time.

Any new polwarth bought is an organic base. Any new falkland merino bought is sustainably sourced from the falkland islands. Both are available through Ashland Bay, an imported located about 60 miles from me.

I drive an electric car and take it to most in-state festivals. (FYI, the car is primarily charged at night.) I rent another car if I have to go to Seattle. All of the power at my home is purchased green power, which means that we're supporting the expansion of the green grid.

Recycled Packaging:
I reuse as many of the plastic bags that my products arrive in. That may mean an old label underneath a new one, or a slight tear in a bag. If you require or desire gift packaging, please say so and it will arrive in a nice piece of tissue paper inside a new bag.

I am changing over to eco-enclose packaging that is made from 100% post-consumer waste. I still have many bags in stock though, so I'm not sure whether you'll see them in January or June of next year.

Packaging Reuse:
One of my local Salem Etsy team members sells mirrors online. Whenever I have too much styrofoam, air packets, bubble wrap, etc., I send it to her for reuse.

All paper gets recycled.

Festival bags - any plastic bags given out during festivals are reused from the packaging the yarn and fiber comes in. They do not have handles. 3 out of 5 of the cities I do festival business have plastic bans, so if you are coming to visit, I recommend bringing your own!
