About

Sketchy.

The best thing anyone ever said about me was this:
"You're an odd duck, Alice, but I mean that mostly in a good way."

History has always been very alive to me. I have always felt like I got plopped here from another time and place, without any explanation. Nothing of modern culture has ever made sense to me. I've been described as an "old soul," and I'm fine with all of that. I spent my childhood working in a local historical museum. I've always been around antique surroundings. My artwork has always been inspired specifically by the WW1-1920s era, with elements of Victorian and Art Deco heaved in there. This is certainly reflected in my work.

I am inspired mostly by artists who did jobbing illustration work in the early to mid 20th century - those tireless folk who drew for magazines, posters and book covers. Some of my favourite artists include John Singer Sargent, James Montgomery Flagg, and Brian Sanders. This old-fashioned style of drawing is waning in the digital era, but I love working in actual pencil and paper.

I'm mostly self taught, with a few years of classical training. I went to art school, but no one was really into what I was doing, and I was told it wasn't conceptual enough. I think the worst feeling was finding my rejected work dumped on the floor of the hallway outside the student gallery, when someone who threw spats of paint on hacked-up bedsheets got heaps of praise. That kind of attitude tends to put a damper on things, you know?

It took me years to say to myself, who cares? I like drawing the old-fashioned way. I never stopped. So what if it's not conceptual? It makes people happy. It makes me happy. And so - here I am.

One foot in the past, one in the future - that's my M.O. My other M.O. is telling people to avoid art school.

I'm available for commissions and special requests. Just send me a note and I'll draw you something.
