About

Hello, and welcome to Tokyomodern!

For nearly 20 yrs, I have been collecting vintage kimonos and obis that bear uniquely Japanese interpretations of Art Deco, Mid-Century Modern, 60's & 70's designs, and are surprisingly contemporary-looking for their age. I began to carefully disassemble many of the kimonos and obis to create wall hangings. My plan, in the beginning, was simply to find a practical way to display these incredible textiles on my own walls. Then I began painting on some of them. The amount of painting I do on each wall hanging varies greatly, depending on the fabric. Some just have accent painting, and others have quite a lot of painting going on, with the pattern underneath as the base.

At "tokyomodern", I am also listing some of my original published artwork from the past, as well as current artwork that I will continue to list as time goes on.

Also, I am constantly listing vintage kimono and other Japanese clothing items, as well as sets of fabrics from my disassembled vintage kimonos and obis, for others to use on their own projects. The wearable, fully intact items are listed in "Vintage Japanese Clothing". If the items have been dismantled or cut, or are too badly damaged to wear, they will be listed under "Vintage Kimono/Obi Fabric". All of the fabric from a single kimono or haori is being sold as a set, in order to ensure maximum exclusivity of the vintage fabric, and also so that there will be enough fabric for creating another garment if desired. These items are priced according to rarity, quality and condition.

Sometimes the vintage kimonos, obis and fabrics still have a slightly musty or moth-ball smell. I have found that these smells usually dissipate after being aired out for a bit. You can also have these garments dry cleaned. Please understand that many of these garments are 60-80 yrs. old (or older), and the only reason so many of these beautiful vintage Japanese textiles have survived all these years, is that so much care was taken in cleaning and many were stored in very airtight cedar-lined steamer trunks or other storage, with moth balls or kimono incense. Even so, there are occasionally foxing or age spots that have developed over the years.

I put an extra effort in photographing and presenting each item in as close to the actual color and condition as possible. Keep in mind that your monitor may show a slightly different color from mine. Please don't hesitate to ask if your are unsure of the color or description.

Also available are items from my own Japanese and non-Japanese vintage/antique collections.

Thanks for visiting Tokyomodern!

Shipping
I generally process orders the day the purchase is made and ship within a day or two of purchase. Packages will only be shipped to the address confirmed on the Etsy order.

All shipping will be via U.S. Priority Mail (unless other arrangements are made in advance), and is calculated for the furthest U.S. distance from me.
