This is the type of transaction that makes me love Etsy... Beautiful, one-of-a-kind, handmade piece of functional art; great communication; perfectly packed and quickly shipped item. What could be better?

About

Making usable art for your home for almost 20 years

Hello Fellow Fans of Hand Made,

Thanks for stopping by my shop. I’m Emily Kiewel, sole owner and maker at Tombo Studio. I’ve been a studio potter for the past 20 years (that’s a lot of pots) and love my job!

After receiving my B.A. degree I had the opportunity to live in Japan. While there I had the good fortune to be instructed in the Japanese tradition of making pots. This was my most formative training. My Sensei is a third generation production potter and was generous enough to teach me some of his craft. The training was rigorous. Often, a day would consist of forming a single shape hundreds of times over. Each was recycled until a perfect item was created.

The techniques I learned are over 2000 years old which includes making my own tools for each piece in my repertoire. One of these is a "tombo" which is made from bamboo. It is used like a caliper and measures the depth and width of the pot to keep the size consistent. Tombo means dragonfly in Japanese. This is the inspiration for my business name.

The methods I use to create high fired stoneware and porcelain give my pottery a unique look and feel. They are light weight, well balanced and functional. I fire in a gas kiln to 2350º F (about 1250º C) which makes my pots and glazes strong and waterproof. My work is made to be used in the home so I use no lead or other harmful metals. All my work is completely food safe.

I love my job. When I wake up in the morning and have a full day ahead of me to spend in the workshop it fills me with anticipation. So many pots to make! So little time! My inspiration comes from my surroundings, I see beauty everywhere; bark on trees, patterns on beetles, fungi and feathers, to name a few.

My aspirations are simple. I hope to make a living by providing well crafted and functional dinnerware and decor that truly enhance your life. I hope when you use my pottery you feel a connection to the spirit in which these objects were made, by loving hands. I am truly grateful for every purchase. Thank you for supporting hand made goods, artisans and makers.

Thanks for visiting my shop, please feel free to contact me with any questions or suggestions.
