    The Beginning of the Tomte

It all started as a gift idea for my mother in law. Every year for Christmas I try to make handmade gifts for my husbands family, his parents and sister and brother. Sometimes I really surprise myself with what I make and how I am able to make it during the sometimes busy and stressful holiday season. I also really enjoy the process that goes into taking fabric, thread, and craft supplies and turning it into something useful and pretty. However each year presents the challenge of what to make. To start, I usually review craft project websites, blogs, pinterest, magazines and the like looking for ideas. During that process a couple of years ago, I kept seeing the cutest gnome inspired crafts. Curious, I decided to investigate the roots of the gnome, and taking into account that my husbands family history goes back to Switzerland, I began to research Scandinavian folklore and found the Tomte, which is Swedish for Gnome. I knew I wanted to make and give something to my husbands mother that was based on the Tomte and so began the pillow.
