Announcement   △ Welcome to my Totem Color Blocks collection, a meditation on the power of color and the beauty of wood. Using hand formed reclaimed wood and inspired by dramatic landscapes and historical art color theories, these pieces honor the preciousness of natural environments and emit the vibrancy inherent in our color spectrum. The purity and graphic nature of the forms captures a tribal aesthetic and communicates a contemporary folk sensibility.

I design, saw from raw reclaimed wood (not unsustainable wood from China), drill, sand and paint each piece. I mix my paints with pure powder pigments for vibrant saturated color and visual intensity.

This small piece is many things at once: simple, unique, charming, calming & a fun pop of color. Pamela was away on vacation when I placed my order; her kindness & promptness in reaching out to me was above & beyond my expectations. I received the wall hanging within days of her return --- an excellent experience all around.

About

\ˈtō-təm\ A venerated emblem or revered symbol

My Totem Color Blocks collection is informed by the last ten years I've been working in fine art object conservation for museums and private art collectors. Breaking down colors and complicated patterns into their most essential components is a skill used extensively in the practice of restoring artwork. Getting dialed into that process is a very meditative and extremely rewarding practice. That process has made me hypersensitive to the dynamics and power of color.

The titles for my pieces are mostly derived from dramatic landscapes. I take an image of a special natural environment and distill it down to its most elemental colors. It’s a reductive process, but it helps me absorb and understand the true beauty of a place. Each piece I work on is a meditation.

I’m also inspired by Native tribal crafts and structures. Many use earth pigments and plant dyes from their environment and attach meaning to them. White could symbolize north, or snow. Yellow, east where the sun appears; black, west where the sun disappears. The most amazing use of color I’ve found yet is by the Sami, a Nordic indigenous people. They have color-coded lassos which indicate the season and temperature in which they work best! One of their colors is a hot fuschia that looks devastating against pure white snow. I also go into a trance over primitive abstraction, the polychromatic geometry of Russian Suprematism, Yayoi Kusama, Mark Rothko, Agnes Martin and Josef and Anni Albers from the Bauhaus.

The basic shape I chose for my pieces is a powerful structural form for me. It’s reminiscent of real totem poles, but also tall buildings, monuments and memorials. My future goal is to create a grand installation of Totems in some remarkable landscape. Until then, I am happy to be making these more intimate pieces to inspire, charm and delight my Etsy friends!
