Real humans. Real books.

I was born and raised in Oregon, USA. My husband Magu is from Córdoba, Argentina. We began making books by hand back in the late 90s, while living on a boat in Alaska. We spent a number of years traveling throughout North and South America, and you could often find us in the plazas, selling our books while Magu played his guitar to passers by. In 2001 we returned to the sierras of Córdoba. Because Argentina was entangled in an extreme financial crisis, we dared to try selling our wares online. To our great surprise—it worked! We have been selling hand bound books to humans all over the planet ever since.

Essentially we are a small family business at the end of a dirt road in rural Argentina, grateful everyday that we get to make books for all of you. We hand craft everything here in house. We thrive because of our commitment to quality and customer service. Since 2001, we have shipped custom books to an amazing array of locations: to tiny islands in the South Pacific, the Maldivas, Japan, South Africa, literally every state in the USA, not to mention Australia, New Zealand and most of Europe. After years of roaming, we now wonder at the places our books continue to visit while we stay pretty much in one place.

While we’re physically located in central Argentina, you only pay shipping from the USA because we ship to our US distributor every week. Our turn around for custom orders varies! Send us an email to find out what the current wait time is. Usually, we can get a custom order to you in about 10 days, depending where we are in the cycle.

Transient Books is made possible by many: our US distributors in Oregon (my sister Sara and niece Olivia), my brother Rick who set up the site originally (we’ve since become our own webmasters), the USPS delivery folks in Oregon, not to mention a whole string of suppliers, supporters, family, and enthusiasts in both North and South America.

Mostly, Transient Books is made possible by its varied and hugely interesting clients. We never cease to be surprised and humbled by the individuals who appear in our inbox with their memorable ideas and enthusiasm.

  • Magu & Alex Appella

    Owner

Magu is from Córdoba, Argentina and Alex is from Oregon, USA. Magu the musician. Alex the writer. Together, we're Transient Books.

  • Carolina Herran

    Maker

Caro is our right hand here in the studio. While Magu and I race around (tracking down materials, doing admin, attending the clients and the children), Caro patiently makes headway on the ever growing stack of books that need to be completed.

  • Olivia & Sara

    Shipper

It's all about family! Olivia is Alex's niece, and Sara is my sister. These lovely gals take care of all the shipping from Salem, Oregon. We couldn't do it without them, their creativity and good humor.

Frequently asked questions
Really? FREE SHIPPING on all orders within the USA?

Yes! We offer FREE SHIPPING within the USA and REDUCED SHIPPING for orders shipped abroad. Amazing. We wish we could do free shipping for international orders as well. Until that's possible, we hope the discount helps a bit.

IMPORTANT SHIPPING ADVISORY: We use USPS for shipping. We have noticed an increase in clients reporting their packages stolen from the front door step. If you prefer your package to be shipped insured, and/or require a signature, please add this upgrade to your order: https://www.etsy.com/listing/752168461/shipping-upgrade-insured-andor-signature

Custom and personalized orders

We gladly do custom orders! Our turn around varies, do consult.
And, we're very happy to provide cover mock ups free of charge. Just click "Ask a question" or "Request a custom item" from any listing and let us know what you have in mind.

Do you offer wholesale or bulk discount prices?

Of course! We're happy to offer wholesale or bulk order discounts. Just let us know what you're interested in.

Will I see my book's cover before you create my custom order?

Of course! We don't complete custom orders until we get the go ahead from you. I try to get cover mock ups to folks in less than 48 hours. Just click "Ask a question" or "Request a custom item" from any listing and let us know what you have in mind. Or at check out, include your ideas in the "Notes" area. Be sure to check your Etsy messages, we'll be in touch very soon!

What are your business hours?

We're self employed, we work all the time! (But we do take random Tuesday afternoons off, just because.) I try to answer all emails in less than 48 hours. For the most part we work Monday to Friday, 8-6 EST. I do tend to check in with folks over the weekend, though, too. We're always glad you were in touch, and we try to answer as soon as humanly possible, but I do have to turn that darn phone off every so often or I'll lose my mind (and drive my children absolutely nuts).

Where are you located anyways?

We're physically located in the sierras of Córdoba, Argentina (although I'm from Oregon originally). We ship to our US distributor in Oregon every week so you only pay shipping from there. Read more about the amazing Transient Books experience on our About Us Page.

What's your current turn around time for custom orders?

Our turn around varies! It depends on where you catch us in the cycle. We're physically located in the sierras of Córdoba, Argentina (although I'm from Oregon originally). We ship regularly to our US distributor in Oregon so you only pay shipping from there. Be in touch and I'll let you know when you can expect to receive a custom order. Sometimes the wait can be as little as 7 days, but a usual turn around is about 12 days, from your first email to the actual delivery to your door.

It's also worth keeping in mind that our turn around time is influenced by the wonder of hand crafting all items from start to finish according to your specifications.

Items found in our Gift Shop (in stock, ready to go) ship within 2 business days.

My goodness, is that what it REALLY costs to ship a book internationally?

Unfortunately, yes. We ship USPS Priority Mail, Insured, based on weight. Books are heavy, and I haven't figured out how to convince USPS to make an exception for us. (Come on! They're awesome books! Let them fly over the planet for less!) We charge less than the actual cost. No handling fees. We gladly offer combined shipping on orders of multiple items. If you're inadvertently overcharged for shipping for any reason, we do refund the difference.
International delivery times do vary from country to country, but for the most part items show up on door steps in 8-10 days. Items travel insured, with a tracking number.

Does Transient Books accept BITCOIN?

Yes we do! At check out, just choose OTHER for the payment method and we'll take it from there.

Does Transient Books have an Environmental Commitment Policy?

Of course we do. Here at Transient Books, we love what we do, and we love the planet that makes it possible. We are committed to lowering our impact and hand crafting a product that makes this globe a better place, without contaminating or causing damage.
