If you decide to use a different yarn than is used to create the pattern, make sure you knit / crochet up a swatch. Measure the number of stitches per inch in your swatch. Is it the same as the gauge in the pattern? If yes, you are good to go. If no, then you need to adjust the yarn weight or needle size up or down depending on the difference between your swatch and the gauge in the pattern. Too many stitches? Go bigger. Not enough stitches? so smaller.
You must check your gauge to ensure your item will end up at the correct size.
