About

Baptized by FIRE

The long and short of it all is it's all been trial and error.

I have a BFA in Studio Art with a specialization in Ceramics from Texas State University. In college my work tended to take the form of large scale ceramic sculpture. I know clay and I know how to fire a multitude of kilns from gas to electric, raku and even soda to get the effect that I want, but the one thing I never learned was what happened after the making process. After graduation, I was at a complete loss at how to make a living in clay. I had some of my sculpture shown in galleries nationwide but now without access to the monster kilns and endless supplies I had to find some other way to keep my hands in clay.

I found a high-fire ceramic studio in Austin. I had no direction I just knew I had to get muddy and I knew the finished pieces had to go somewhere other than my house which was already filled to the brim with pottery. So I opened my first etsy shop, Turner Studio. There were high-fire knick knacks galore! Everything from functional pottery to ceramic buttons and knobs. The shop was a high fire mess! All kinds of pieces and all kinds of glazes and no two alike.

In 2010 I moved from Austin to Houston to be with my love and now husband. However this move left without a ceramic studio to work in. I tried to set up a work space in a spare room but I still had to drive pieces back to Austin (that's over 300 miles round trip!) to fire them at my old studio. Needless to say, this put things on hold for a little while. I call this part of my life the clay sabbatical.

In 2011 my then still boyfriend bought me a super tiny little electric kiln. The inside chamber is only about 7in by 7in but it was enough to give me the jump start I needed! I refocused my work to something 7 x 7 with a finish I could be happy with from an electric kiln. I revisited the mold making process, a technique I used for my college thesis, and began molding and casting found objects that were interesting to me.

After spending more hours that I care to admit just staring at these objects in clay I began to see them transformed into objects that could once again be used in day to day life. For me personally, the cornerstone of my day to day life was coffee! So these objects took on the new role of coffee paraphernalia.... sugar bowls, pour bottles for coffee flavors, mugs, creamers and more!

This leads to the line currently available in my shop today. I chose glazes that offer a pop of color but not too stylized so they could fit with a multitude of different kitchen styles. I have a real love for extinct objects, the things we no longer use, and the things we won't be using much longer like wrist watches or electrical insulators. It's been a long journey to this point and there had been a LOT of trial and error but I'm sure it won't be the last. I hope to continually change and grow both as an artist and a person.
