Handwoven antler baskets, pine needle baskets and gourd art by Susan Ashley
I specialize in antler basket, gourd art that incorporates weaving, pine needle baskets and woven necklaces.
My antler baskets blend the ribbed-style basketry of my Scottish-Irish heritage with my love of Western Art and Native American art. Each basket is shaped and woven completely by hand and is a product of many hours of choosing, soaking, and weaving materials. My baskets often include leather, honeysuckle, day lily leaves, sea grass, polished rocks, feathers, beads, date palm stems, wisteria vines and pine needles. I have been weaving baskets for 30 years.
Gourds with coiled woven rims and pineneedle baskets have been a fairly recent addition to my repertoire and have become very popular items. The process of preparing the gourd is very time-consumimg. I clean the gourds inside and out, wearing safety glasses and a respirator mask (because of the mold and dust flying around during this process). Then I cut them with a special saw, dye them with leather dye, seal them, and drill small holes at the edge before adding the woven rim and embellishments. Preparing a gourd can take several hours before I even start weaving on it.
