This top is wonderful and well made. It doesn't pinch under your arms which is a bonus for me after arm surgery. Great product. It doesn't have much give/stretch getting on and off. Packaged beautifully. I will buy more.

About

every one has an intimate story to tell

Under The Root began as a personal homage to modern dance in 2005. Jennifer had continued to study dance at Columbia College Chicago with minors in business, philosophy, and liberal education. A need of specific undergear for dancers, performers, artists, eccentrics, and other free thinkers of experience was eye spied. This clarity leaped forward throughout the following years. It was permeated with research, development in pattern and design, body shape investigations, production analytics, and material studies. Although the exploration seems to be endless, an innate sense to coalesce the early twentieth century underground with our modern day responsibility overflows every facet of the business.

Jennifer strives to organically expand this intimate brand, achieve complete sustainability at every stage of the manufacturing process, collaborate and exchange with the socially conscious community, and substantially support slow design as a means to heal our planet.

Since 2005, Under The Root has specialized in the compassionate and transformative revolution of sensual alchemy for body movement visionaries. It continues to design undergear that imprints an expression of functional sensuality onto your skin by conjuring sensual equality for every person, a channel to your sustainable planet, and a fair wage in exchange for high return in quality work. The designs provide a practical, yet ethereal wickedness with a mission of equilibrium.

FABRICS, TEXTILES, AND DYES

Industrial Hemp and Organic Cotton Blends
The industrial hemp and organic cotton blends have a sincere texture throughout the weave. These natural fibers, for now, have been grown and manufactured into cloth from a fair trade farm in China. With the increasing amount of awareness for the sustainability of these plants, we can all hope to see the farms spring up like forests in the United States. Whenever appropriate, the materials will be laundered with natural detergents to promote the texture and shrinkage BEFORE construction. We have chosen these fabrics for 5 strict reasons:
-Hemp fiber is one of the most durable and energetic of all natural textile fibers. Products made from hemp outlast their competition by many years.
-Hemp does not wear out, this natural fiber wears in. The increased amount of time in which hemp is used, the softer it becomes for its purpose.
-The porous nature of hemp allows it to breathe, it stays refreshed in fiery weather. Furthermore, the amount of air which remains in the fibers begins to warm by the body, this helps the intimate apparel naturally suspend warmth in chilly weather.
-Where the ground permits, hemp plant roots descend for three feet or more. The roots anchor and protect the soil from runoff, building and preserving topsoil and subsoil structures, similar to those of forests.
-A test was run by the SGS which proved hemp fiber to be anti-bacterial. It is naturally resistant to mold and ultraviolet light.

-Midweight Jersey – The fabric has a tiny bit less texture than the other two choices. We have found that because of the ease against the body and its scientific properties, this material reigns supreme for sensual body movement.
53 percent hemp / 43 percent organic cotton / 4 percent spandex : 8.2 ounces
-Lightweight Jersey – This fabric takes advantage of the natural texture without over reaching the limit of pleasure or stretch. It is minimally lighter in density than the midweight above, but retains the properties for our health.
53 percent hemp / 43 percent organic cotton / 4 percent spandex : 6.9 ounces
-Lightweight Jersey Knit – A fair amount of texture coupled with the fascinating bliss of cascade. If ever there was a story to tell with material, keys to that door are here.
55 percent hemp / 45 percent organic cotton : 5.2 ounces

Miscellaneous Materials, Trims, Findings, and Accents
The miscellaneous materials and textiles have been reclaimed from estate sales, thrift adventures, closure of design houses, fashion industry surplus stock, remnants and cut offs, plus warehouse pre-consumer waste. We work to discover repackaging, non-animal testing, upcycled, restructured awareness for nearly every facet of the business. The cleaning products, office supplies, greener electricity, and any other resource which can be utilized for a wee bit smaller footprint is part of the business practice here and has been for quite some time. A continuing search for zero waste in collections. There is no perfect formula although the goal is to remain open for changes, opportunities, and return more love than we have taken from our planet.

Low Impact and Fiber Reactive Dyes
While no dye is absolutely free and clear of disadvantages, the choice of low impact and fiber reactive dyes greatly reduces the negative effects on the environment.
-These dyes bond with the fibers at the molecular level, therefore less water, salt, and chemicals are necessary.
-Low impact and fiber reactive dyes have a higher than average absorption rate, roughly 70 percent, depending on the color. This means less water is required in the rinse process and less dye runs off in the water. The runoff water can be recycled for the next generation of dye bath.
-Low impact dyes do not contain heavy metals, nor do they require toxic chemical mordants to fix them to the fiber. Non-iodized salt, in limited quantities, is the mordant of choice to soften the natural fibers for dye baths.

Until we achieve the fact of living on lands or have lands available for wild harvesting, natural dyestuffs from nature will continue to be the highest standard goal.

The color palette and images captured of the designs do continue to vary depending on your computer color settings, the camera and light plus retouching from the photographer, and your individual color perception. Inconsistency and variations of color are to be expected as part of the unique formulation of hand dyeing organic fibers. This means the colors shift from dye bath to dye bath and from season to season, based on the specific conditions when each fiber was grown, processed, milled, and woven.

How to care for your Under The Root intimate apparel?
These products are ethically handcrafted for a long lasting life. If you wish to prolong their quality and value for years to come, follow the steps below:
The fabrics have been washed and preshrunk then dyed and washed once again. We recommend the first couple washes be done alone or with like colors to further set the dye.
hand wash or use delicate machine cycle with cool water
minimal natural detergents such as castile soap
line dry, flat dry, or delicate dry in a machine
