The basket is a beautiful piece, but unfortunately it had a crack when I received it. Susan, the seller, sent me directions for fixing it. But frankly, after spending almost 300 dollars (between the original price of the item, shipping and import taxes), I didn't expect I would end up with a damaged piece. Also, on top of the sum already spent, now I'll have to purchase the supplies to attempt to fix the cracked item myself. Ouch! What a headache! UPDATE: Susan issued me a 50% refund later, to compensate for the inconvenience + repair costs. She clarified that she typically deals with damaged items differently, but my case was a bit more delicate because the order was overseas. Susan, thank you for the gesture!

About

Ceramic and Papier-Mâché

I started Up in the Air Somewhere with a very specific set of pieces in mind. I wanted to make ceramic water towers and silos as tabletop pieces, so I signed up for a ceramics class.

From there things evolved and my initial inspiration from the industrial landscape loosened to a much broader interest in forms born out of utility. Currently most of my pieces develop from curiosity about materials. How can I make papier-mâché elegant and substantial? What happens when I dip this ceramic cup in rubber? I feel free to try things and fail because I know that the good stuff comes next.

I love being able to work with both clay and papier-mâché as my primary materials. Clay has endless possibilities and can be much more functional than paper, but I love the start-to-finish control I have when working with paper. You never know if a ceramic piece is going to work until it’s been fired, and even then something wacky could happen in the firing process. So there is a wonderful balance for me that comes with working in both mediums.
