About

lovingly handmade & totally heirloom quality

The Urban Baby Bonnet project is the brainchild of artist and mom Colette Palamar.

Colette's daughter, Sabine, was born in early October 2007. And the search was on for a perfect hat. Colette tried knit caps-- these were great in winter but still did not keep the sun off of Sabine's face. Sun hats seemed to have brims that were too floppy and were always covering her eyes and making her cry. Bucket hats were another choice, but these seemed to "ride" down the front of her face, especially if she was being carried in a sling or baby carrier.

One afternoon, Sabine's great-grandmother, Ada, came over with a special gift for Sabine-- a little bonnet that she made. It was adorable-- featuring a black retro floral fabric and long strap ties. But, it was too small. Although she asked Ada to make another, larger hat, Colette couldn’t wait—she was on a mission.

After looking at some commercial baby bonnets, and determining the features she liked and did not like, Colette designed her own pattern for Sabine's first real bonnet. She went to her fabric stash & found 4 fabrics that she loved. After a few hours of hard work, Colette completed what has become the *UB2* signature bonnet-- the Vines & Goldenrod. Colette tried it on Sabine, and it was perfect! The bonnet was a hit everywhere they went. Colette describes how she went from making a special hat for her daughter to making baby bonnets that have dazzled the world: “People were constantly stopping me, raving about how cute the bonnet was, and asking me where I got it! And I thought, if this many people love the hat, maybe I should make a few to sell!” And just that quickly, *UB2* was BORN!

Soon after that first bonnet, Colette quickly became an expert seamstress and was creating literally hundreds of bonnets in her living room using two machines-- a 5-thread Janome serger and a Shark Euro-Pro sewing machine. In just a few months, expansion of the project required a business license and wholesale fabric purchases.

The bonnets continued to attract attention everywhere, and her local sales to boutiques began to grow quickly. While Colette loved designing and sewing the bonnets, she soon began to wonder how this new bonnet work fit into her previous fine art projects as a painter, sculptural ceramicist, and installation artist. She wondered how this work fit into her educational background in art, philosophy, and environmental studies (she has an MFA and a PhD). As it happens with all of her art projects, the rationale emerged in a flash of inspiration. One day, it just dawned on her: the bonnets ARE an art project!! And this brought the project proper into existence. Just a few days later, she wrote the project statement and set about learning how to make the bonnets even more available. That's when she found etsy, an on-line arts & crafts site. Essentially, the *UB2* Project joins Colette's experience with color from her work as a painter, her sculptural abilities honed by her work as a ceramicist & installation artist, and her philosophical expertise from her work with phenomenology and aesthetics.

Since the inauguration of the project, the bonnets found their way all around the world to Italy, Sweden, France, England, Germany, Australia, Canada, South Korea, Thailand, Egypt, Greece, Norway, Puerto rice, Cyprus, Japan, Ireland, and Singapore, and New Zealand, among many others. Colette’s ultimate goal is to bring a bright spot of artist-designed color to people's everyday lives.

All of our bonnets are handmade by the members of the Urban Baby Bonnet Collective Shop. You can read more about the role that each member plays on the right hand side of this page (just hover over the photos to learn more). And of course, everything is made right here in Ohio. All seams are professionally finished, and everything is triple checked for quality. These bonnets are DURABLE and will easily last through several kids. Colette has a few fabric combinations intended for both boys & girls-- so the bonnets really can be passed between kids. In fact, Colette hopes that the bonnets will become heirloom items for many people-- existing as one of the few treasured items saved in hope chests for grandchildren-to-be. She hopes that the project will transcend generations. The *UB2* bonnets truly are “a postmodern twist on an heirloom classic! ℠

*UB2* bonnets are THE go-to baby gift. They work for boys and girls and in rear and front facing carriers and slings. When the brim is out, they allow discrete breastfeeding, and prevent the necessity of using chemical sunscreens on baby’s delicate facial skin. They’re reversible, machine washable, and super-cute. One customer described the bonnets as having a “my-mom-is-super-hip” vibe. *UB2* bonnets are fun, funky, functional, and fashionable!

Hi! I am a work at home mom of one. I used to be a college professor, but the school I worked for closed down (!!) when I was 6 months pregnant with my daughter (YIKES!).... and so now I make these adorable baby bonnets! The pattern-- and my boyBonnet pattern-- is completely my design-- and is both distinctive and original! I've spent hours designing and refining the pattern and have sewn and sold thousands of bonnets and guarantee that you will LOVE your UB2-- or your money back. I stand behind the craft and design of my product-- 100%.

I LOVE etsy-- and am an ardent supporter of fellow artisans. I am also a strong believer in upholding the intellectual rights of designers-- and am currently rather distressed because someone on etsy stole my pattern and is making my bonnets (and my "boyBonnet") and selling them!!! DOUBLE YIKES! I have received emails from many etsians who have noticed and been shocked by what is obvious dishonesty-- and I appreciate the support that you all have shown my shop! It is hard to believe-- and disappointing-- that people would be so dishonest, but I digress... Rest assured that what you're buying here is 100% original, authentic and a work of art! :-)

And, yes, the copycat IS back... and more like UB2 than ever! Strange, but true.. and so oddly complementary.

I work hard to make my bonnets hip, fun, and unique-- and as environmentally sound as I can. The paper tags are made from 100% recycled material, 80% of which is post-consumer waste. They are printed using soy inks and by a company whose processes and shipping are carbon-neutral-- which means good things for our atmosphere! And, of course, I have the organic cotton line of bonnets for those who want to be environmentally conscious AND fashionable!

I want to make a product that is of excellent quality. All of my bonnets are sewn with the utmost care-- and the quality of my & my sewists' work exceeds industry standards. Like most things in life, with bonnets, you really do get what you pay for. Yes, you can purchase a cheaper bonnet, but you'll also receive a cheaper bonnet. All internal seams are professionally finished, and each bonnet is checked carefully for flaws at each stage in construction. You can be sure that any bonnet you purchase from me will last through your kids and will be an item to save in your cedar chest for those future grandkids! This really is an heirloom item. In fact, if your bonnet fails due to a manufacturing defect, I will repair it (or replace it) for you, free. All you have to do is send it back to me with a note. Of course, I can't repair some kinds of damage, like if you run over it with a lawnmower or your kid chews the straps off.... but the craft of the bonnets is something I guarantee!

Please note that my sewists have pets... and I do, too. The pets are not permitted access to materials or areas where production is happening, but we do love them, and sometimes their hair can be carried on our clothing... and sometimes there may be an errant hair or two transferred inadvertently to a hat. If you are very sensitive to pet hair, please let us know and/or please launder your bonnet before wearing it.

I hope you love your bonnet as much as I do! :-)

Additional policies and FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions:

Do you sell wholesale?
Yes, I love to begin relationships with new boutiques! I have a great wholesale package. Just CONVO me, give me your Tax ID number, and we can set up an order that works for you!

Do you have pets?
Yes! We love animals and have both cats and dogs. They are not permitted access to areas where work is happening, but we do love them, and sometimes their hair is on our clothing... and from time to time, an errant hair may escape to a bonnet. If you are very sensitive to pet hair, please let us know and/or please launder your bonnet before wearing it.

Where are your hats made?
Our hats are sewn by work-at-home women in their homes. We do not use deodorants or perfumes. We do not launder fabrics before using them. Because hats are made in people's homes, they often do not smell like typical "chemically" unwashed commercial fabrics.

Do you sell your pattern?
No, unfortunately, I do not sell my pattern. It's an original design and is copyrighted. You can, of course, make one for your own personal use, but you may NOT make the bonnets and sell them-- even if you draw the pattern yourself by looking at my bonnets. Please play nice! I am trying really hard to find a way to make a living while raising my daughter... and I have already had one person copy and sell my bonnets. She's now made minor changes to the pattern-- but it's still the design I made. Thank YOU for understanding and respecting intellectual property-- and for purchasing from the site that started the Urban Baby Bonnet revolution! :-) If price is truly an issue, convo me. I never let someone go without a bonnet just because they can't afford it.

Where do you get your fabrics?
Although I purchase some fabrics retail and some on etsy, I purchase most of them wholesale directly from the manufacturer.

Why are your bonnets so expensive?
In a word? QUALITY. Quality items take time to create. Each of my bonnets is sewn with professional quality machines and each has professionally finished seams. The quality of these bonnets is far above what you can find anywhere else. In addition, I sell these bonnets in boutiques around the country and around the world. My prices represent retail pricing. As a small manufacturer, I have to ensure that the cost of my product is the same everywhere it can be purchased.

If price is really the problem for you, please CONVO me, I am sure that we can work something out with a trade or discount. Just ask. I want YOU to be part of the UB2 art project, no matter what! I don't ever want cost to be a barrier for any of my potential buyers.

Finally, I am not otherwise employed... this is not a hobby, it's my full-time work. I love what I do, and think I am very lucky to be able to be a work-at-home mom, but I am also trying to support myself and my daughter on the income I make here and from my wholesale accounts. I do know that hobbyists can charge less for a similar product... but the *UB2* bonnets are second to none and are the best quality hat you can purchase. I am SO sure that you'll LOVE your bonnet (and find it worth the price) that I guarantee all of my work 100%.

Do you have any other shops?
Yes! I have two other shops-- one where I plan to someday list my fine art paintings, and another where I sell my fabrics. The fabric shop is called Fabriconium: A New Element in Fabrics (my husband came up with that!) and the Paintings site is called Ecologies. The etsy addresses are fabriconium.etsy.com and ecologies.etsy.com.

Can you send a gift card with my bonnet?
Yes! Just let me know in the notes to seller that you're sending this as a gift and I will be happy to include a little card. I have the cutest, tiny envelopes that I make myself... :-)

So what's the deal with the knock-off bonnet shop?
Well, it's incredibly flattering that the copy-cat seller continues to copy not just my bonnet and fabrics, but my dresses, bibs, and even the wording I use to describe my work! She obviously loves what I do-- and I appreciate the compliment! It's funny that a seller would steal a product design and make the assumption that etsy shoppers are silly enough not to see the fact that the bonnets are duplicates of the work I've done for Urban Baby Bonnets. This seller even went so far as to have a friend email me to ask how many snaps I use on my straps so she could duplicate that, too. I think she is trying to trick people into thinking they are buying a *UB2* bonnet. It's truly a shame that there are people in the world with such a slack ethical orientation. And, there is SO much room in the world of craft for all sorts of variations on similar products. It's a bit puzzling as to why someone would choose to copy a shop, marketing strategy, and products rather than make something that it theirs and theirs alone and thus truly unique.

What about your copyrights?
I hold copyrights on both of my bonnet designs-- the modBonnet and the boyBonnet (the person who stole this design has now tried to copyright it!) and on all of my original fabric combinations. Copyrights exist in the years 2008 and 2009, but I will continue to add them as I add fabric combinations. I also hold trademarks on all slogans, tags, and other branding information. I really resisted the idea of copyrights, but ever since my work was stolen by someone on etsy, I have begun to understand why it is important. All of my terminology is trademarked, including modBonnet (or mod bonnet), skiBonnet, ecoBonnet, UB2, Urban Baby Bonnets, modMittens, modBib, etc. Most of these are also either registered with the US trademark office or are in process.

Any other questions? Just convo me! :-)
