Lovely as always! It arrived on a gray, rainy day, and brought a much-needed pop of color.

I'm adding round hooks to these mismatched beauties before sending them off to their new home. You can choose your finish and hook style (including clip-ons!) for most earrings at urban legend.

About

Please don't eat the jewelry.

I believe that jewelry tells a story. It can be a secret story, a reminder to yourself; it can be a story you tell to the world around you; it can be a costume or a talisman or a suit of armor. I love stories, and I love the challenge of translating an image, a palette, or a narrative into a beautiful, wearable medium.

I opened urban legend in 2009, when I was just beginning to be bewitched by the bold colors and rich textures of high quality vintage plastic beads. I'd been making and selling jewelry for two years by then, but wanted a new place to showcase my passion for color and the craftsmanship that went into making these beautiful materials. The lightweight nature of plastic makes it possible to make bold, chunky jewelry that doesn't feel weighty, and has excellent durability, as well as being eye-catchingly beautiful. That early shop has grown over the years into a full line of jewelry focused on color and balance, and I truly love what I do.

I am an obsessive hunter of materials, and my beads come from many sources. Over the years, my collection has grown from a few handfuls of good Lucite to a virtual playground of bins full of beads, sorted by color. Many of them are deadstock from closed factories, or from other collectors; many others come from costume jewelry that I've bought at estate sales and antique markets to take apart and rework. Some of my favorite pieces have been made with beads from jewelry that belonged to aunts and grandmothers of friends and customers. It's a particular pleasure for me to take an old piece with sentimental value and give it new life for another generation.

Jewelry is a very personal thing, and quality and choice are very important to me. If you love something I've made, and if it becomes a part of your self-expression, I want it to last a very long time. All of my earrings are made with sterling silver hooks and wire, and can be customized with a variety of different hook types so that you can wear your earrings with the style that's most comfortable to you. (The only exception to this is clip-on hooks; I offer two different styles, but my standard stock for those is not sterling silver.) My necklaces are made with high-quality flexible plated base metal chain, and I have it on very good authority that they hold up to snagging, tangling, pets and toddlers. When you purchase an urban legend necklace, you can select your length and your color of chain. For customers with metal allergies, I also offer a variety of non-metal materials - leather, linen, or waxed cotton cord.

I love what I do, and I'm so happy you've found your way here. I hope you enjoy my work. Please contact me with any questions or special requests, and as always, please don't eat the jewelry!

Frequently asked questions

Sizing details

Having trouble deciding on a necklace length? My most popular option is a 20 inch chain (approximately 50 cm). This length is comfortable for most people, and works well with either chunky or dainty beads.

Care instructions

Silverplated chain and bright sterling silver earrings will tend to tarnish over time, but can be easily cleaned with a soft polishing cloth. Immersing jewelry in a polishing solution is not recommended.

Custom and personalized orders

At this time, I am not able to do custom orders. However, if you see an item you like in my sold listings, I may be able to recreate it upon request.

Gift wrapping and packaging

All of my jewelry ships packaged in brown kraft packaging (either a pillow box or a square jewelry box, depending on size), and is closed with a ribbon, ready for gift-giving.
