Announcement
Welcome to the Useful Components Etsy Shop. International shipping is back as of 27-JAN-2023, via Royal Mail Tracked.
There are new and vintage electronics items being added all the time which might help with a repair job, so please do check back for more useful items. All items are on a UK postage rate per order. This means that if you want something else from my shop for delivery in the UK, you can add as much to the shopping basket as you want and still only pay one postage charge.
Look out though. The bigger, lumpy heavy items cost more to post, so adding a 2Kg vacuum capacitor to an order of two tiny transistors will increase the basic one-off postage rate.

The beautiful trace that you get on an oscilloscope when playing with some custom built Ambisonic surround-sound gear.

Loud reception using the Useful Components crystal set radio kit on a farm fence while out hiking in Shropshire.

The BTR/3 Stereo tape machine at Radio Glen in Southampton. We still used that machine in 1993. After I'd fixed it :)

Sometimes one has to erect a big crystal radio aerial to see how good it is. This 100 meter one was pretty good:)

I dabble with surround-sound and annoyingly claim to have built the first *cheap* soundfield microphone in 2003.
Useful Components: Electronics kits with fully detailed instructions online.
As a kid I was fascinated by the Ladybird books, "Magnets, Bulbs, and Batteries," "How to Make a Transistor Radio," and "Simple Electronics." The kits that I've devised are similar projects using modern components which I hope can provide some easy things to make, and at the end actually do something which isn't completely trivial. There's no screen or programming, no software, and nothing to go out of date. You just put it together, and it works. I think that the instructions provided online are highly accurate and step-by-step, just like those old books but more reliable with the modern components.
If you want the university level explanations, they are there at the bottom of the page as well.
I like to think that they could be quite handy for school science projects.
As well as the kits, there are many other electronics parts in the shop now which may help with repair jobs or odd projects.

CLIFF Electronic Components
Redhill, England
I supply useful CLIFF parts that no-one else will stock, e.g. all available colours of one type of control knob rather than just the black or red variant found at other retailers. These are frquently used by customers for fixing and customising vintage mixing desks and equipment.
