we the people is born

the shop culture and style comes out of my own life journey, in a nutshell...

I was born in Ohio, raised in Birmingham England, moved to Texas, then Ohio, then back to England, then to Michigan until I graduated high school, then moved to Chicago when I was 17 to pursue fashion design but realized i didn't like the industry, moved to Kentucky, back to Michigan and then decided to get a leadership degree in Australia so i moved to Sydney for 3.5 years, spent some time in New Zealand and Fiji and moved back to Michigan 3 years ago to pursue another degree in theology, I'm now onto my masters in the same field. Needless to say I'm a big city girl, mixed with a beach hippie, living in the suburbs...after living in different places I have experienced first hand that locations have little to do with scenery because to be honest, it gets old after a while.......places are about people, and people are what matter.

I have always been an artist, paintings, sketches, music, singing, stage design, fashion, and now jewelry. I actually picked up jewelry as a hobby as something to do with my artsy friend. I used to do house parties for groups of women and sell very sparkly glass jewelry...it was fun but it wasn't "me"...I ended up moving to Australia so the jewelry got put on hold other than the odd custom order here and there. When I moved back to Michigan I started to battle my Ulcerative Colitis disease really bad and I was confined to my bed a lot. I had no clue what to do, I couldn't get a job, couldn't finish my degree so I started studying online and making jewelry to sell online. It was the first time I started to explore my "style" and I went by the name Vade Mecum meaning "go with me" in Latin. My desire was to make unique jewelry that I had not seen anywhere else using unique findings both vintage and new, especially for guys who seem to get gypped in the jewelry department. I wanted guys to be able to look flash and have something unique as well. I got really into the steampunk style and continue to enjoy making steampunk items but I also love flashy swag pieces with leather and fabric, and hippie pieces with rustic necklaces and feather headbands....Vade Mecum wasn't really representing my whole style either.

I felt conflicted because I wanted guys to be able to shop for their style without being swamped in a sea of girly items, but then I didn't want my store to only show the industrial style. So one day, today in fact, I was pondering what to do and it just came to me that the jewelry I make is about people...and not just a certain kind of person but people from all over the globe who each have a unique flair to their style and a desire to showcase their creativity through artistic fashion. We are all individuals but we all share similarities.....WE are the people, WE set the trends, WE have a voice, WE are the creative ones. So it made sense that this store should be all about representing the vast sea of amazing people who are each looking for something unique to connect to.

I don't want to just sell jewelry, I want to sell things i have made that someone else in another place looks at and thinks "she gets me, this is totally me." See we are all different but we are all united.

The name isn't meant to be political or overly patriotic - but I can't help but think about what this nation was founded upon, the people making their own choice. Do you ever shop around and get bored with the same style you have seen for the past 5 or more years and wish for something totally different..........you can't quite put your finger on it, but you know you'll know it when you see it........well thats what I want we the people to be like for everyone, to be that place where people say "thats it!" and find something that represents their uniqueness and creativity.

I'm not interested in just making money - to be honest starting your own business is not for the person who wants to get rich quick! ha I want to do this because I love connecting with people from all over and fashion is one of the most exciting ways to experience life together.

So welcome to we the people! You are a vital part of this story and I'm excited to see where this journey takes us all!

Welcome to We The People!

I love designing for both men and women and so many, if not most, of my pieces are unisex and can be worn by both!

Each item marked OOAK (one of a kind) is only made once to ensure that you have a unique piece! My desire is that my style would mix with yours to make a piece that tells a story, otherwise why not just shop at a mass-produced store? :)

I use quality metals, glass, Swarovsky crystals, semi-precious stones, exotic leathers, and other fun materials.

My necklaces are both sturdy and delicate, treat them with care (remember, jewelry is not titanium, show it some love!) and you will have a long-lasting piece of art for many years to come!

Much Love!

Kara :)

Returns and exchanges
Please contact me through the store within 48 hours of receiving the item if the item is damaged. I do not return items if you change your mind, all sales are final unless an item is damaged or does not arrive in good condition. I will ask for a photograph of damaged items to confirm. I make sure to wrap items excessively in bubble-wrap to ensure your item reaches you in good condition.

If you need to return the item I will issue a refund for the item only and not the shipping cost. Please contact me if you are returning an item. You will be refunded the money once I receive the item.

Any item that you return should not be worn or smell of smoke, else I will not be able to issue a refund :)

You will be responsible for shipping costs to return the item as well as additional shipping & handling for me to send a replacement (if a replacement is desired), unless the item was damaged in which I will pay shipping for the replacement.

I am very willing to talk to you to sort out any issues or concerns you may have with any items and purchases. Your satisfaction is my top priority so please contact me with concerns before leaving any negative feedback, thanks!
I accept orders with credit card through the etsy store directly or payment through Paypal. Payment is due at the time of purchase.

If payment is sent directly from bank account such as an e-check I will ship as soon as payment clears.

If you decide you no longer want an item after purchasing you must notify me IMMEDIATLEY, I often ship within 24 hours and once an item is shipped there is no refund.

Shipping costs have dramatically increased in 2014 - where it used to cost no more than $4 to ship internationally, it now costs closer to $8. Domestic has increased by $1 also. I wish I could offer shipping for free like I used to!

I ship to whatever address you list on Etsy, if you wish for me to mail an item to a different address, you must specify please!

All items are shipped within 48 hours using USPS first class or USPS priority mail for larger orders. Domestic items take 2-5 business days, international takes around 1-2 weeks but keep in mind that in countries like Australia customs can hold items for 4-6 weeks; I cannot be responsible for international customs.

I ship in a padded envelope for most orders and additionally wrap items in bubble wrap if they need extra protection. Each item comes in a jewelry bag. To save on paper I do not print your invoice, but you can easily print it off of the etsy website under your purchases section if you need to.

Comes with a tracking number, Yay! You can track your package by reviewing your purchase invoice on etsy once I have printed a shipping label. Your package is NOT insured with this free service. The US post is mostly flawless and I hardly have an issue with items but if you are concerned about the safety of your package and want to insure it, you can purchase insurance, which is usually $1-2 extra - CONVO ME before or immediately after a purchase so I can add this for you.

You only need to add one insurance listing to your shopping cart no matter how many items you purchase; it covers your whole order.

Once the package leaves my hands I cannot control the post, and am not responsible for losses or faulty service in your city/state - so I would suggest paying for this service if you are concerned about the safety of your item.

USPS first class does come with tracking - it will for sure track within the USA and will even track in your country for most cases. It also usually has delivery confirmation so that I can see that it got to your destination. There is no insurance included in the basic cost for international. Once an item leaves the USA I cannot be responsible for what happens in your country. If you wish to secure your package message me separately for international options.

Also, make sure you know the customs policies for your own country and what is allowed and prohibited. Some rural areas charge fees for incoming international packages, I cannot be responsible for items that are confiscated, or have an added fee for delivery or pick up in your own country.

Countries such as Australia, China, and Turkey are very strict in customs, therefore purchase at your own discretion. Australia, China, and Turkey tend to hold items in customs for a long time. We The People is not responsible for the decisions made within your country for holding items.

DURING HOLIDAY SEASONS: During the busy holiday seasons I still ship out 48-72 hours after time of purchase (and most times under 24hrs) from the time of your purchase USPS first class. Note that shipping does take longer during holiday seasons, and international packages can get held up in customs longer. If you wish faster delivery contact me before ordering!

By purchasing from this store you agree to the above policy. Thanks for understanding!
Additional policies and FAQs
Allow 1-2 weeks for custom items or replacement items as i need time to gather materials and make it!

Thank you for your business! Without you, I would not have the means to keep creating these pieces of art for jewelry-lovers, such as yourself, to enjoy around the world. I really appreciate your purchase, and I am honored you would choose my items over the many amazing creations here on etsy!

I ask that you do not re-sell any of my items without my written consent. I do often do wholesale orders for boutiques across the nation, but this must be organized and permitted by me directly. All images and pieces are exclusive to the artist of We The People and cannot be duplicated in any means. Please respect the rights of the artist! ;)

I appreciate your interest in what I do! Feel free to contact me for any questions, concerns, or suggestions! I do custom orders - if you have a different design in mind or you want me to make something similar to an item that has already sold, feel free to message me and ask!

Let the journey begin!
