Joana Rodrigues (aka PITANGA, 1980) is a Portuguese Plastic Artist that has been drawing since she can remember with a unique style based on characters from her own imaginary world.
With a degree in Graphic Design finished (IADE, Portugal 2003), she had several jobs as a Designer and Web Designer, but soon she came to the realization that her path was not to sit all day at a PC, designing for third parties with little input from her own imagination. That is when she got back to the basics: drawing in paper using techniques and skills she thought she had already forgotten… However, drawing is just like riding a bike, one simply does not forget how to it!
Craving originality and uniqueness combined with her passion for custom design, made her acquire some new skills in sewing and she stared customizing shorts with funky fabrics and even other materials and soon after came the sneakers, caps, bags, jackets and t-shirts and she never stop customizing ever since. Nevertheless, were the sneakers that she loved to customise the best, taking in consideration that she is herself a sneaker and unique custom clothing lover[U1] . In addition, and because at the time in Portugal she couldn’t find another artist that would dedicated himself to this form of art 100%, she look a leap of faith and risked it, becoming one of the only plastic artists in the country developing this kind of custom design.
PITANGA Sneakers are hand painted with fabric paint, but mainly with POSCAs, with a waterproof and wear resistant finish. Every pair is unique and personalized taking in consideration every customer personal taste and request, which makes owning a pair of PITANGA sneakers so much more than just owning another pair of shoes: It is more like an experience!
All of her designs are 100% hand made in her own illustration style. PITANGA’s mainly inspiration comes from fantastic and imaginary creatures but also from contemporary illustration and traditional tattoos.
Now, she spends most of her days customizing sneakers for those whose see fashion as a lifestyle and a statement, but she stills finds the time to dedicate herself to street art in the form of Graffiti, to design custom Portraits, and some other partnerships. At the moment she is focusing on her first solo exhibition and of course, she never stops customising sneakers and showing her art on the streets.
