    Filling the hours with stitching

I live in New York City. I work on cross stitching in my spare time: in the park, on the subway, at a restaurant, during my lunch break. It's a real conversation starter. People are always amazed I'm doing it without a pattern, and they want to know what it's going to be when I'm done.

Most of my orders are custom orders. It actually takes a lot of preparation before I can even start a custom order. First, I have to translate what my customers have told me they envision into an template for the finished work. I don't create a pattern per se, but I do plot out the design and spatial relationship of the different elements of the design.

Then I have to count out each individual stitch it will take to make each letter of the words my customer wants. Then I have to add those together and figure out how much space each word or line of words will take up, so I can decide how best to space the text. Next, I measure the fabric to fit the frame or hoop I'll be using. Finally, I measure out a border on the fabric, to make sure the wording and design will fit symmetrically in the frame or hoop. Then I can get started.

I love collaborating on custom orders. It's so much fun to hear the ideas people come up with, and I can often use them as a jumping-off point for new project ideas. The most rewarding part is hearing back from customers who are happy with their finished samplers.

Often, even on custom orders, my customers will ask me to use my creative judgment on the overall design. Cross stitch gives me a creative outlet I don't get from my day job.

I fill my spare time with cross stitching. It's something I enjoyed as a little girl, and I picked it back up a couple of years ago. Once I realized that I didn't need a pattern, it opened up all new possibilities.

    Additional policies and FAQs
Custom orders are a collaborative process. I engage in conversations with my customers to find out what they want, and then I come up with a price based on how long the project will take to complete. However, if the customer then wants to make changes to the previously agreed-upon design, please understand that I will need to charge more to accommodate the additional time.
