The History Of Marbling.......................... “Suminagashi” is a unique and early style of marbling originally developed in Japan. The two Japanese words; “sumi”, meaning “black ink,”and “nagashi” meaning floating. This was the origin of marbling, which first appeared at the end of the Heian Era (A.D. 794-1185. There is a belief that the technology necessary for production of “suminagashhi” traveled from Japan to china and Turkey, Persia via the Silk Road across Asia
The Art of marbling “the Ebru”, or cloud art” then starts to resurface exclusively done for wealthy patrons in their personal ateliers. These views substantiated into a small number of manuscripts, books
India, Persia and Turkey were then significant locations in the history of paper marbling after it was brought from Japan, during the 1400s.The Art was then taken to western Europe by the crusaders, and by the 1600s,France and the Netherlands had become well known for the quality of their papers. An essential part of book binding, with the papers being placed on the inside covers of all fine books, which still is one of its main purposes today. For centuries later the marblers often did their work in secret “studios”, behind locked doors, and hardly anyone could hope to learn the art unless he was born into a “marbling family”

The British learned the to appreciate marbling from the Dutch, who were active marblers. Toys imported olland were wrapped in marbled papers in an attempt to avoid High taxes levied on marbled products. These “wrappers where then pressed and used in book binding. Pretty cool huh?
