About

Handwoven textiles for you and your home

I've always painted, drawn and made things, but my path to weaving wasn’t exactly direct. It was while working in London that I became interested in textiles and did various evening courses to explore more. When the opportunity came to move to the Netherlands and go back to college to study fashion and textiles I jumped at the chance. Even though I found the whole idea terrifying!

I always knew I wanted to weave, from the moment I toured the textile department of the Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague and saw the looms. I can't explain the feeling, I was just drawn to weaving. I love the process, the fact that I can take a mass of unruly yarns and logically but magically order them into something useful, tactile and, hopefully, beautiful.

After leaving college, I set up my studio with some help from a start up grant, and began experimenting: combining extremes of yarn, thick and thin, shiny and matt, flexible and stiff, felting and nonfelting, and exploiting their properties through the fabrics' construction and by further treatment once the fabric had been woven, for example by shrinking and felting. I fell in love with wool, and it plays a major part in most of my work; I often gently felt the wool by washing as the final stage of creating a piece. This softens the colours and gives interesting textural effects with other nonfelting yarns.

To me, a textile isn’t simply a flat piece of material; it's many layered, and the story behind the textile, the process of its making, and things that have happened to it, sometimes accidentally, during its construction all add to its identity. Colour and structure are vital. When I weave, I paint with the yarns. I have an image, a text or a journey in mind, which I translate into a fabric using texture and hue.

I weave on an electronic hand loom, which has a maximum width of 50cm. The size of each piece I weave is limited by this. Early on in my weaving I realized that the experimental lengths of fabric I was creating were well suited to being used as scarves. And so the story of VeronicaWEAVES on Etsy began...
