Learning to sew in third grade changed my life.

When I was eight years old, I learned to sew in an afterschool program with several of my friends. Somebody's mom or grandma patiently taught me how to use a sewing machine to create amazing things. My best friend and I shared a love of clothing and spent hours sewing our clothes and gowns together. My own grandma used to take me to art shows and I dreamt about what it would be like to be the woman in the booth selling her beautiful handmade wares.

In 2001, I made a few purses as gifts. As I showed them to my friends and family, everyone wanted to buy one. Before long I was arriving at the Fulton Street farmers market in Grand Rapids, Michigan with my sign "purses $15" and a bin of handmade goods early each Saturday morning. The Eastown Street Fair was one of my early shows and I remember speaking to a newspaper reporter about how the Reed’s Lake clothesline art festival would be a major goal for me. A couple years later my booth was set up right downtown East Grand Rapids on the shores of Reeds Lake, achieving my goal!

Today, I teach private sewing lessons. I continue to revel in the fact that I can design clothing to express my personal style. My work can be found at galleries and art shows in northern Michigan.

Currently available at Wool & Honey in Cedar, Michigan and Tinker Studio on Old Mission Peninsula in Traverse City, Michigan.
