Vintage inspired jewelry for the "old soul"...

The evolution of a jewelry artist emerges over time and with experience. Inspired by all things artistic and creative, as a young art student beginning at the age of five and in the many years to follow, I discovered the art of jewelry design. As I continued to explore the craft of making my own jewelry, specifically working with beads and metals, I once again discovered my niche… Vintage Jewelry Design!

My art classes over the years developed a passion for color and design; while my indulgence in crafts developed my ability to conceptualize and create art. The art of jewelry design allowed me to merge both worlds of experience as an artist. Now, where did the passion for vintage jewelry design emerge…? As I reflect on this question, I am reminded of a vintage shop in New York City that I discovered when I was in college… An older gentleman who had immigrated from Europe probably in the 1920’s or 1930’s owned this fantastic shop filled with wonderful vintage beads, crystals, metals, findings, resin and lucite… The store, which was in business for more than 60 years, was one of the oldest bead shops in New York’s garment district. I was totally enamored by all the treasures within my reach for creating jewelry! My connection to vintage jewelry design was almost instant as the shop owner became my mentor. I remember my mom would often comment with laughter that he treated me like family… So this is my path and passion into vintage jewelry design.

In the passage of time, my passion for vintage jewelry design continues to grow all the time! I am inspired by all things vintage… fashion, furniture, movies… I am most inspired by the Victorian period television epics featured on Masterpiece Theater on public television…Downton Abbey, Cranford, Mansfield Park. There you find inspiration in the fabric and tapestry of wardrobe and set design; the delicate feminine fashion accessories and the beautiful home furnishings. I also discover inspiration outdoors in nature and architecture; the color combinations naturally occurring in the world around us and the visible textures of the building structures, roads and pathways in our environment.

One day while visiting a boutique client, the idea of my Etsy shop was born... destined to be a wonderful opportunity for me suggested by a fellow artisan at the boutique! It would be a process, a journey to fruition; well worth the wait and time invested to develop a shop that reflects my artistic values and inspiration...
I invite you to take this journey with me as I build my shop one jewel at time...

Renee Prioleau is the designer of "Vintage Jewels" who is passionate about beadwork and jewelry design.

Since my first art class at the age of five years old, I have explored many art forms; however when I was introduced to beadwork by my aunt, I discovered my niche in the world of art.

Since that time, I have studied the craft and perfected my technique. I continue to explore my potential for greater expressions of creativity. Inspired by color and fashion trends, the creative design process is fun and exciting!

It's a wonderful experience to be a part of the indie craft movement, where independent artisans can share their artistic talent with the world. I am devoted to support and promote aspiring local artisans through my nonprofit organization, The Bead Studio Inc. (www.beadstudio.org) in the Washington DC area.

Thanks to my parents who introduced me to world of art and supported my passion through the years. And to my friends, I am grateful for their continued encouragement to showcase my creativity and launch my website. Finally it's done!
