About

vitrifiedstudio, handmade modern pottery by Shelley Martin. From my hands to yours.

vitrifiedstudio is a small ceramics studio located in Portland Oregon. All of the work is all low production, artist made, studio ceramics. It is an alternative to the production work you find in other studios, workshops, and factories. Each piece found in the etsy shop is unique, considered, and made only using my hands, a few simple tools and the pottery wheel.

My designs for vitrifiedstudio evolve naturally, and I hope to constantly be growing as a maker and sharing this process online for everyone to see. I share photos and videos of this process of creating ceramics and running a small home based business on instagram, username @vitrifiedstudio. I also announce sales, giveways and coupon codes on social media for fans and followers only.

This etsy shop holds only my custom urns, vases and bottles. For the complete collection, including dish sets, corked containers, mugs, etc. visit my website. www.vitrifiedstudio.com

Frequently asked questions
Custom and personalized orders

I have many custom listings shown in my etsy shop. feel free to contact me before you order if you have an idea for a custom item that is similar to what is shown, but different. I love trying new modifications on my listings or creating a new upgrade option if it’s possible for me to make something new.

Sizing details

All sizes are shown in the item details / description page of each listing. Please take a look there if you have questions about what size to order, or what the dimensions of a size are. All of the pieces are handmade without a form or mold, so my sizes do tend to vary slightly beyond what is listed. My clays all have different shrinkage rates and shrink in different ways so I have a hard time being exact with my dimensions.

Care instructions

All of the pieces are microwave and dishwasher safe, but as they are handmade ceramics made in very limited quantities I highly recommend that you take care when using and cleaning your pieces. The microwave is tough on all ceramics, and overtime microwaving you piece will make it (and all handmade ceramics) more brittle. Also the heating element in your dishwasher can get very hot, so I recommend placing the pieces away from the heating element to avoid thermal shock.

Packaging

Generally all items are shipped in a cardboard box, filled with biodegradable starch peanuts, and if there is more than one ceramic piece in the box they are wrapped in foam sheets. I do not include receipts or packing slips with the order, please access yours online if you need it. I include a card with my info as well as care instructions. I have shipped abroad many times without any issues. The customs office in your country might do an inspection. Gift wrap is not available. The biodegradable peanuts will dissolve in water if you are wondering how to dispose of them.

Returns or issues with custom made items

If you have an issue with your custom order, please contact me directly within 14 days of receiving the item. the custom orders are made for you and do take time (sometimes more time than shown in the listing if there is an issue with the making process). I am happy to give refunds as needed if there is an issue with your piece, but please contact me directly to discuss. Generally I dont want the piece sent back to me, but I will work with you to remake the piece or offer a refund as needed. Please contact me directly via a convo if you have any questions

Imperfections and Delays

As all of the pieces in my shop are handmade, and most listings are custom listings where I make the piece from the start specifically for the customer, there can be imperfections and delays. These are one of a kind, custom, made to order pieces that are all made from a one person studio. Pieces might have small imperfections on them, and sometimes there will be delays. Sometimes I need to remake a piece due to unexpected events that happen in the drying or firing process, and there will be a delay on your order. Other times there will be an imperfection like a small surface blemish on the underside from the drying process. Please contact me via a convo to check on you order or to learn more about my current production schedule and backlog.

How to Order

To customize the items, please select the item listing that is most similar in size and shape and lid type to the one that you want. Then select the options from the sizing menu as you add it to your cart ( size, gold accent option, quote option, glaze in text option). All urns come with name/date. After that the remaining customizations are added in the "note to seller" prompt within the transaction during checkout. I recommend opening a second window during checkout of the item details page of the listing so you can refer to the list of customization options as well as view the color palette and stamp palettes. For anything you miss during checkout or want changed later, just send me a convo within etsy and I can add a note to your order.

How to seal the urns

The urns are available with cork lids or ceramic lids, as seen in the listings. The cork lids generally fit snug, although they are a natural material they will have imperfections and also I modify them to the shape of the urn opening. The ceramic lids fit loosely on top of the urn and will need sealed into place after you add the ashes to secure it. You can also seal the cork lids into place if you would like. For sealing, I recommend a clear silicon sealant like you find in the paint section of Home Depot. It is applied easily, dries quickly and clear, and cleans up without hassle. You can also use a thick glue, epoxy or wax. I have had customers have their crematorium or funeral home seal the urns also, or you can do it.
