About

Thanks for saying 'No' Mum!

Many moons ago my mother went on a holiday. Little did she know that she would return having learnt to make a teddy bear. I was intrigued with the cuddly creation she had made. Wanting to make more she purchased a pattern book. Flicking through the colourful pages I came upon a pattern of a tiny bear, a mere 7cm tall. I asked Mum if she would make it for me. The reply was that no, she would not. If I wanted to see and hold it in the flesh then I would be the one responsible for sewing (by hand) on such a small scale.

Rather ignorant of the appropriate materials needed, my first attempt was fashioned from cotton fabric scraps. The result was a curious little fellow and a growing desire to learn and create more.

Skip ahead a year or two. I’d made a few more bears from proper mini bear fabric, was married and a new mother. I loved my child dearly but was desperate for something I could do just for me. Hubby had a brilliant idea. Why not make bears to sell? Neither of us knew what this really involved so we set out to learn. Along the way we met some helpful souls who explained that they needed to be my own unique designs. The first pattern was largely inspired, in its shape, by my (then) baby boy.

I was in love, having been bitten quite hard by the bear making bug…and the wee world of VonneBears (as it is now known) was born.

In a quiet nook in a beautiful old colonial 'Queenslander' cottage VonneBears come to life. From a concept in my imagination to a pattern and then a multitude of tiny stitches, the wee bears are stuffed with love.

A cheeky little bear who has unwittingly become the 'face' of VonneBears. He stands a tiny 3.5cm tall.

Welcome to the wee world of VonneBears! I just love miniature things and so naturally my bears are too.

I am a bear artist so you can be sure that all my patterns are original to me. Each little bear is lovingly handcrafted from mini bear fabric, well stuffed with a wee bit of polyfill and a few weighted beads to help them sit nicely, their arms and legs are string jointed so you can pose them however you wish, and they have beaded eyes if they're big enough! (the teeny tiny ones get embroidered eyes instead).

Each mini bear is tagged in one of two ways. Either a wee plastic tag with my name and year the bear was made OR an 'E' embroidered onto a footpad (for when the tag would be ridiculously large in comparison to the bear).

Please note: The mini bears are not toys. They are intended for adult collectors.

In the 'Friends and Relations' section of my shop you will find some of my other creations. Once again the patterns are all original to me. Please refer to the item descriptions for further information about how they were made.

Each of these items is tagged with an embroidered 'E' on the ear (unless they don't have ears - in which case it will be somewhere else!)
