David Voorhees hand made functional pottery is wheel formed and altered stoneware and porcelain, wood-fired in an unusual wood-firing, salt/soda, car kiln. A gas kiln has recently been constructed in the kiln yard to focus on reduction glazed porcelain.
David has made pottery in Western North Carolina since 1975. His recent work involves his unique wood-fired kiln car kiln design featuring a bourry style firebox and a pizza/bread oven completed in 2009. Fired with the help of potter friends, the kiln takes around 30 hours to reach 2400F when a soda spraying is done through 12 ports. The kiln can hold upwards of 200 pots and is fired about 3 times per year. David also makes oxidation fired porcelain pots and collaborates on Silveramics jewelry with his wife, jeweler Molly Sharp Voorhees. Look for these colorful porcelain and silver jewelry items on Etsy under SilveramicsJewelry.

David Voorhees Pottery, creating a life in Western North Carolina
Both of his parents were professional painters, so it was natural for David to follow in their footsteps pursuing art making as a life. Once he touched clay he found his medium! Primarily self taught, he has focused for many years, working with porcelain and under-glaze painting his wheel formed items with subtle floral decorations then high firing them to a luminous state. His Wedding Wish Vases© are his most popular items through the years with hundreds sent to all corners of the USA and even abroad. Check out my other Etsy shop featuring my Wedding Wish Vases: www.etsy.com/shops/WeddingWishVase
Years of pottery making, learning his craft and traveling to art shows along the Eastern Seaboard led to opening his own store, Hand in Hand Gallery in Flat Rock, NC with his jeweler wife, Molly Sharp. After 16 years in business they retired from the gallery to spend more time in their own studios.
A new wood-fired kiln, volunteer work with Empty Bowls projects and teaching round out his full life as an artist. After 40 years, he continues to be amazed at the enjoyment found in the making and sharing of this beautiful art form.
