Announcement   Welcome to the WaggonsWest TRAVELING CHICKEN AND MONSTER SHOW!

GM Earth Day (Wentzville, MO April 2), Forder Elementary (St Louis, MO, April 9) Poptropolis (St Louis, MO, April 23) Race for the Rivers (St Charles, MO August 27)

You've seen them at the shows no they are starting to show up here in the shop. Monsters, Chickens and other assorted Stuffies! These are SMALL in size. They are pocket friends or office pals not giant toys. Check the measurements in the listings.

Upcycled Badges and other stuff!

Who knew badges were so cool? They are showing up all over the place this fall! Overload your backpack and jeans with our affordable versions. Request a custom patch with your name or some other favorite.

Here at WaggonsWest, we strongly believe that a badge in hand is worth more than two badges on a wish list. We do everything we can to keep costs down and to make custom badges and patches accessible to everyone. Please do inquire if you want multiple badges or to place a bulk order. We may be able to make some adjustments for you.

My story, the short version...

I am a recovering academic who currently works for a grassroots environmental organization on issues and projects relating to clean water. In my spare time, I make fiber art, primarily upcycled badges and stuffies made as much as possible from scraps and remnants and repurposed fabics. I make things that make me laugh. I started making traveling chickens when my kids were younger. They could 'travel' into your brother's face without making mom crazy. Lately they have begun traveling the world with people posting photos using #travelingchicken. From there I started making other creatures, each with their own attitude and story and the crazy has grown. I work at home using a single needle embroidery machine. My husband works with me cutting denim and making the badges I design on his own machine in his man cave. While I work with some licensed patterns most of my stuffies are original designs that I have drawn, digitized and sewn.

And an update to the short version: The Mother-In-Law from Hell (no really, she lives there) was bored. Really bored. There isn't much to do in Hell once it freezes over. So we found her her very own white elephant. She is taking off making all the large sized sew on patches we never find time to make. She is driving the creative train with her color choices and requests for new designs to stitch. These really big sew on patches (complete with needle and thread) made their debut at Kawa Kon and will be trickling out at shows and here on etsy in relatively short order.

My story, the long version....

I am a life-long creator. I love taking ideas and people and resources together to make things happen. I do this in my work as the head of an environmental non-profit organization. I do this in the rest of my life as an artist and imaginer. I really love it when I can find ways to use art as an entry to helping people learn about the environment.
In fact, my sunpainting projects started out as a part of teaching students about the problems associated with invasive plant species. Kudzu is probably the best known example because it is easy to see why it is a problem. There are many other plants that look pretty and seem innocuous but are causing real problems for native plants and animals. I started taking the sunpaint along on invasive removal work days so that the students could make a t-shirt with the leaves from these plants. They would have an easy way to identify them in the future.

That little effort has lead to a much bigger effort now using sunpainting to teach children about invasive species. Kids make fabric. We give the fabric to quilters who make quilts. The quilts are sold or raffled to raise money to buy tools to remove invasive species. It is all pretty cool.

In my spare time, I sunpaint. I try to use upcycled clothing and fabrics. I love to take something that is shabby or just old and turn it into something that is fresh and better. I occasionally list some of these upcycled clothing here in my etsy shop. Because I work with vintage and used garments, each one is unique. Sizes and styles depend upon what I can find and what I feel like painting on it.

As part of my effort to upcycle, I am always looking for clothing and fabric. That has lead me to using these materials in other projects. I really enjoy making bags and other things out of pants. There is something about making a purse out of a pair of pants that just plain cracks me up.

Speaking of pants and cracking up…. A couple years ago I wanted to make a sample patch for my husband. Upcycler that I am, I grabbed a pair of his jeans and cut them up for the material I needed. I can’t exactly say that was the most popular thing I’ve ever done! But it turns out that the denim from old jeans is the perfect substrate for badges. I started looking around for designs and ideas to turn into merit badges. I will stitch out just about anything that entertains me. Thus the merit badges for Wine and Pina Colada’s.

I am also game to try and come up with a badge that suits your needs. I had a blast making patches for a roller derby team. (Thanks Harv!) I am learning to digitize my own designs and love the challenge of trying to come up with something that meets the needs of my customers. Check out some of my sold orders for custom and reserved sales to see what I have done for others. Let me know what you want and I will be happy to work with you to produce a design that you love.

You can follow along with my creative whims and see my quilting efforts on my blog.

Additional policies and FAQs
I specialize in small batch custom work. I know that sometimes you just want one badge and you don't want to pay a huge set up fee, design fee and minimum order just to get it. I will work with you to come up with the item you want for a price that is reasonable.

Simple changes in color or the addition of text typically cost an additional fifty cents per badge. More detailed design work will cost more. I can work from your drawing or your description. I will work with you until we have a design that you like and that I am able to produce.

I work with upcycled materials, primarily old blue jeans in dark and light blue, black and white. If you have a special request for a background color it may take me some time to find an item in that color that is suitable for the purpose.

I am also happy to make multiples if you need more than one. Let me know what you are looking for and when you need it and we can work out the details.

I keep my turn around time as short as possible and will keep you informed of the progress of your order

I do my best to keep the per badge cost as low as possible.

All of the designs in my shop are either original or purchased with permission for sales. I cannot create items from licensed designs unless you have written, transferable rights for the sale of items made with them. Convo me if you have any questions.
