Announcement    Thanks for visiting. Consider giving original art as a unique and memorable gift.
Stop by to see recent paintings in my solo show, Navigating by Triangulation, which will be hanging at the Acton Memorial Library, Acton, MA, March 2 - April 27, 2019. I'll host an opening reception on Saturday, March 16, from 2-4pm, with snacks and non-alcoholic beverages. Hope to see you there.

The tension between movement and stillness informs my artwork. I find inspiration in landscape, memory, and dreams. Color is central to the mood and emotional resonance of each painting. Abstract forms and patterns are juxtaposed with storytelling or dream elements, tree branches’ organic geometry, and vintage imagery. Washy, translucent glazes of acrylic create layered atmospheres of subtle, vibrating color and patterns of dots, stripes, or triangles. The interplay between graphic imagery and painterly color creates exciting juxtapositions and may raise questions about painting vs. printmaking. I consider myself a painter, but have also been influenced by my graphic design work, finding much to explore in the intersection of paint and image manipulation software. For more artwork, visit me at my art web sites, irenestapleford.com & wantknot.etsy.com, and follow me on Instagram at irene.stapleford.

Please contact me for more accurate custom shipping quote to your location in the U.S. or internationally. Any image in my shop can be printed as an affordable, limited edition archival print or greeting card, just ask or use the art card or digital print listings, and specify which images you'd like.

About

Painting, sewing, composing color and form

My etsy shop is a venue for sharing images of artwork. Everything I make is an investigation and celebration of color and form. I find never-ending inspiration in tree branches; sudden compositions, images and colors from my mind's eye; dreams; landscapes, skies, birds and trees observed while driving, walking, or just looking out my windows.

I paint outside, en plein air, and in my basement studio, where I can lay out several panels at once and spread coat after coat of acrylic medium and atmospheric colors. I sometimes use painter's tape to mask patterns of triangles or stripes. For the image transfer process, I employ photoshop and a color laser printer to enlarge and color enhance my own drawings or scans of vintage images.

My sewing area is a long white shelf my husband built for me in a separate area from my painting studio. I repurpose warm-water washed wool and cashmere sweaters, with even very small scraps serving as pops of color to be appliqued on ornaments, mittens or felted bags. "Waste knot, want knot."
