Announcement   Thank you for visiting Brandi Couvillion Studio. I am a mixed-media artist whose passion is wrenching up the past up - sometimes literally from the ground around me - and reassembling it into an expression of melancholy and decaying grandeur of the city from which I hail - New Orleans.

I take that passion and inspiration with me into my current creations, which includes etched map jewelry culled from archives.

As this is only a sample of my work in the studio, I invite you to visit www.bcouvillion.com for a deeper experience of my inspiration and work.

I bought this as a Christmas gift for a friend that's hard to buy for. She loved it! Beautifully crafted and unique. I would definitely recommend for those friends that have everything. A one of a kind gift.

About

Historically inspired jewelry handcrafted in New Orleans.

My creative side has always been inspired by the built environment around me and the various states of its decay, as well as the fleeting ephemera we fail to appreciate each day.

My mixed media and jewelry lines are composed, quite literally, of lost fragments from the past - from remnants of porcelain shards and Victorian era shoes to porcelain dolls excavated from old world privies with a local salvage expert.

My metal etchings of historic New Orleans maps—some dating from as early as the 1700s—make permanent an ephemeral aspect of our city’s history. As jewelry, they become small, wearable archives in suspension.

These archived images preserve New Orleans history and culture, particularly the city’s architectural history. In detailing the landscape’s evolution over time—from the types of structures occupying plots of land radiating from the old banks of the river, to the trade routes through the vast, outlying swamp—my work showcases the ephemerality of places and emphasizes the importance of preserving them.

The etching process itself creates an inherent tension, even a paradox: it removes material to uncover the past, leaving a permanence behind—but that “permanence” is fragile, since the etching leaves only a whispering trace. The delicate silhouettes of grand homes, female asylums, and cotton warehouses—many now demolished—survive through their reclamation on metal objects, each carried away by individual wearers, sometimes staying within the city, sometimes leaving it behind.

What I try to capture in my artwork is some of the sense of cities throughout the world in the process of becoming a ruin, of present fading into history. All the while, the past is present....

Ultimately, my work blurs these lines between the past and the present, weaving historic antiques with contemporary chic.
