About

Tiny Souls

Handmade- meaning an item created by hand and not a machine and therefore typically of superior quality. It means the item has a soul.

I’ve long believed that each item I create has a tiny soul. How could it not? My hands take simple basic materials and form them into an object, giving them a life and a purpose. My sister once told me a story and it stayed with me. She’s a grade school teacher and her students took a field trip to Ancestral Indian dwellings. While at the dwellings the tour guide told the students how this certain tribe of Indians made pots and bowls by hand and painstakingly painted each one. The Indians believed that when a pot was created the creator’s soul went into the pot. When an Indian passed away the remaining Indians would cut a small hole in the bottom of the pots created by the deceased Indian in order to “release” the soul from the pot to allow the soul be whole again in the afterlife.

I believe that the handmade process holds great power and beauty. For me it represents patience, skill, love, and of course, embracing the perfection that lies within imperfections.
