🌾 We’d love it if you’d follow us on instagram! @waxonstudio

If you don't see what you're dreaming of, contact us and we can make whatever size/color/design you want. We draw in hot wax on fabrics before dyeing them, so virtually any design you love can be rendered into a splashy, crackled, batik look.

Multiples & batches are our speciality. Imagine beautifully hand dyed shirts in different sizes so your family/ club/ team can match.

🌾 ABOUT OUR DYES

Fiber reactive (“low impact”) dyes have a higher than average absorption rate (around 80% depending on the color). Less water is required in the rinsing process, and less dye runs off in the water. These dyes have a lower impact on the environment than other synthetic dyes.

Low-impact dyes do not contain heavy metals (like chrome, copper and zinc), and they don’t require toxic chemical mordants to fix them to the fiber. We use soda ash, a cousin of baking soda!

Colors on your screen will not represent a perfect match to each dye job. Hand dyed fabrics are created anew with each garment so colors are approximate. That’s the true beauty of hand dyed!

About WAXONstudio

Sales 3,439
On Etsy since 2016

From the owner: my tie-dye love affair began while teaching at a summer camp in college, and I turned it into a professional life-long passion.

I was teaching full time at an amazing boarding school when the idea to start my own batik & tie-dye shop started to really pull at my imagination. I had been self employed before, living in Brooklyn, and although that time of my career was partially focused on dyeing, the majority of my energies were being put into the knitting and fiber arts arena. You can still see over eighty free instructional videos that were produced, starring me, on www.happygocrafty.com. After leaving NYC, I moved back to my native Appalachian mountains to teach crafts and music & dance full time, but only made it two years before I was back in the entrepreneurial seat again.

Everything you see on the Etsy store, on our instagram, on the website, and in person at the studio or at summer festivals and craft shows is made right here, in our 700 square foot dye studio, by hand lovingly and patiently, mostly by me (Jess, the owner) or Hope, shop assistant extraordinaire.

Shop policies

Last updated on December 17, 2019
Hi all. We are a small business in the heart of West Asheville, where we dye everything by hand (and teach classes & workshops!).

Please be kind with your purchasing actions: we are not a large conglomerate business and we lose money when you need to exchange. Questions about size? Want to see another pic of the thing you like? Just message us! We would rather measure, video, weigh, and try on things for you than send you something you won't like in person.

Visiting the WNC area? Please do come see our shop in person! In general, there's always more in the shop than you see listed here.

Care instructions

Everything we make in our studio has been washed several times, and is ready for you to put on and wear, or toss in your own laundry! Just like anything you buy, water on the cool side will help your garment last longer than hot. But you don’t need to worry about our dyes running.

Wholesale availability

We are very interested in developing new wholesale relationships. Just send us a message!
