Weapon of Design
Hi there!
My name is Heather Kamla and I am the designer/creator of Weapon of Design which I started in 2007. I have lived in Florida pretty much my whole life. I made my way to Orlando to attend UCF and graduated with a Bachelors degree in studio art. I have called Orlando my home for over 15 years now. I grew up in a family of artists, so there is no surprise I took a liking to, and a passion for, all types of art. I have dabbled in jewelry, embroidery, painting, printmaking and more. I am inspired by nature's raw and beautiful qualities, as well as the intricate and fascinating anatomy of animals and humans alike. I love mixing textures, colors, and themes, all of which feed off one another.
I have a newly found love for vintage dinnerware and to a point its almost become an obsession. It is hard for me to say 'no' to a piece, especially when there are some very unique ones out there. All of the pieces are discovered by way of perusing antique venues or thrift shops, stumbling upon yard sales and estate sales, or in some cases, they are donated to me.
As far as design goes, occasionally a piece will, in a way, speak to me. I will have an idea of what will go on it simply by looking at it, including the juxtaposition of the design already adorning the piece. The designs I use tend to lean towards nature, animal life, and anatomy of all kinds. However, I love to do custom creations. I can put pretty much anything on a plate! Please message me if you have a specific idea that you would like to see upon a piece!
After the design has been applied, I hand paint 2 coats of an FDA approved resin in order to permanently seal the piece. This makes the piece food/drink safe! Although you can eat or drink off of them, I highly suggest not to use in the microwave or dishwasher. These are typically things you would not want to do to a vintage plate or cup anyhow. Another option is to simply be displayed by way of a plate hanger or a plate stand.
The finished product is something that gives me a great sense of accomplishment as some of them take many, many hours to complete.
