About

Depression Breeds Creation

Back in 2004 I had my son. It was a difficult and complicated birth which left us both very ill. As we both got physically better I became ill with postnatal depression. Almost a year had past before anyone noticed. I was put on a high dosage of Antidepressants and it was another year before I pieced my life back together. Towards the end of that year I began take a bit more of a responsibility in my own recovery. I'd heard of art therapy and decided that find some kind of art that I could completely absorb myself in.

I picked up some basic supplies from our local craft shop and made my first ever tiara. It occurred to me, that while I was creating, I wasn't having negative thoughts - I was completely engrossed in the creative process.

The satisfaction I got from creating something from a raw materials and having total control over the design, the quality and components was huge, not something that was achievable in my day job.

It was back in 2007 that I started Wedding And Gems as a part time business as I worked a regular job. Each step I did by myself, creating a website, taking the photo's, seo, marketing, creating, and packaging. Wedding And Gems was my little baby and I promised myself that I would give it a proper go. I would spend a year working on it without giving up no matter what.

It was also the same year I promised myself that at some point in the future I would work for myself. I was fastly becoming disillusioned by the stability of a regular office job, yes it offered me a steady income but in return they seem to have all of the control. Not only in my work life but in my home life too. So I told myself that the next job I took would be the last job I would ever have.

With the birth of my daughter in December 2011 and no proper job to go back to, I took voluntary redundancy and ran as fast as I could away from the local authority I was working for.

I had less than 1 years salary saved in the bank - all business profits but I knew that it was the right thing to do. It was time to live the dream of working for myself.

So here I am :)

Do I miss having a regular salary - no

Sometimes I find it hard to motivate myself to do the "businessy" things as I've not really got anyone to hold me accountable apart from the taxman. Luckily the need not to let my customers down on one of the most important days of their lives keeps me from ever missing a deadline.

    Owner, Maker, Designer, Curator

I'm Kerrie G, I go by that name as my surname gets mispronounced all the time so I figured it's easier for everybody if I shortened my surname to my initial. I live in a small town in the north west of England with my family and a number of cats.

Manufacturers
  • A Wadle and Co

    Birmingham, England, United Kingdom

I chose this company to help manufacture some of my designs because they are a third generation company in the heart of the Birmingham's jewellery quarter. They have traditional silversmithing and bench jewellery skills.
